The only movie I've seen that won an award is Zootopia.

nah Margaret is like... a decade-great, brilliant, meditation on grief (sound familiar?) complete with 9/11 overtones lol

YCCOM makes Manchester feel a tad, idk, redundant, as well. I love all three but his first film is an above board sharp, hilarious mission statement. It's got Lonergan's deep humanism but also rly warm and complete in a way Manchester kind of isnt (in spots.) (edit its been a little bit but dont they end the same way)

Honestly they're all great, it's a little like picking your favorite Em album. MMLP, SSLP, Eminem Show all have their bona fides! @Vahn

I really wanted La La Land to win but I was expecting Manchester By Sea to pull the upset. I enjoyed Moonlight but best picture? I also like how me claiming La La Land should have won made some people pull the race card on me like if I am white lol. People are idiots on every side of the argument.

I really enjoy musicals to start things off. Damien Chazelle put out another one of my favorite movies in the past decade being Whiplash. I understand why Moonlight won, the subject matter clearly has a much more significant role in society today than La La Land. But putting social statements aside and just watching both films, La La Land was also able to hit me from an emotional standpoint, it looked beautiful, sounded great and though the story was quite simple it was just executed nearly perfectly. The weird thing is that after watching both films, I left the theater feeling much more after La La Land. The epilogue/what if scene is something that still haunts me. I feel like every so often we get our Moonlight but I cannot remember the last time we got anything like La La Land. It was special.

Though my reaction was the complete opposite, that's a solid answer.

To me, Moonlight is easily one of the best Best Picture winners, which may sound hyperbolic until one actually looks at the list and realizes that most winners are just "meh" and that perhaps only around a quarter of them are great. After last night's results and a few rewatches, I updated my ranking of all of the Best Picture winners.
