    NAY

Jack Harlow is like if the guy from your high school who was always askin females “where’s my hug at?” became a rapper.

Besides we all know who the best white rapper is.

eight or ten years ago people would have rushed to agree, but now i’m going to go nay.

he’s always been a synthesist (from his own mouth—this is not a value judgment). the soul beats he and just blaze revived definitely had a moment in the 2000s, and 808s probably had an even deeper effect on the sound of pop rap. his whole self-effacing-but-also-self-centered, softer persona was definitely a model people tried to replicate after he came out.

but it seems clear, a decade removed from kanye’s creative peak, that wayne is the more influential rapper by leaps and bounds. by 2016–i’m picking that arbitrarily because it was five years ago—the five biggest rappers in the world save these guys were probably kendrick, future, chance, drake, and thug. four of those guys (drake, chance, kendrick, and thug) are DIRECT descendants of wayne.

Man, Reasonable Doubt is a great album but when IDAHIH came out that was huge and being played EVERYWHERE. It was the album you'd listen to at parties, at the gym, before getting in a fight with a dude over him IM'ing your girl on AOL.... RD is probably better overall but I'd go Yay for DMX

    Introduction
Hi all, and welcome to the new (final) Yay or Nay thread. We got some changes coming to Yay or Nay - we will start tracking the results here in the original post.

    How It Works
Yay or Nay is a simple concept. Each week, there will be a prompt (Example: Lil Baby was the best rapper of 2020) - I will ask 'yay or nay', and people will vote whether they agree (yay) or disagree (nay) with the statement. At the end of the week I will tally the votes and we will see whether the forum believes the statement was true or false.

    Results
Week One - 'Kanye West is the most influential artist of the 21st century, yay or nay?' - The Ayys have it (9-6)
Week Two - 'Jack Harlow is currently the best white rapper, yay or nay?' - The Nays have it (0-8)
Week Three - 'It's Dark and h--- is Hot > Reasonable Doubt, yay or nay?' (cc: @Antman ) - Results TBD

Hard one. I think I'll go with Dark Man X, he was unstoppable back then.

Nay, what does popular hip hop today sound more derived from; Kanye or Chief Keef?

Please do it. Listening through that album from front to back is a whole journey through X's state of mind, while Reasonable Doubt is Jay Z doing... well Jay Z things. Perfectly executed no question but pretty much limited to Mafioso and High Life rap. Something Jay Z did for his whole career (until 4:44 I guess)

Cause I was comparing debut albums, not albums released in 98. Plus I think this is a pretty evenly matched line up and I don't think that would be.

Nay, but it makes me happy to see people saying yay simply because I don't see DMX get his flowers often enough anymore

Yay, they're two of the greatest rap records ever but Its Dark is just a little more substantial, ambitious and personally its one of my favorite albums ever.

nice way to put it lol. I do appreciate that Harlow is pretty genuine in respecting black culture. He got arrested protesting Breona Taylors death with Cordae and he's been v active in Louisville with the whole situation.
better than like Post Malone who used rap to blow up and then pretended like he never met a black person before

FYI: I'm not endorsing the yay or nay statements I make, it's just to gauge popular opinion. I'm in the Nay camp here, but I do think Harlow's an okayish rapper

    here's some tracks I enjoy:
