Listen to early Thug vs. early Future. Thug sounds nearly identical to Wayne sometimes on ICFN. 1000 sounds much more like Gucci/Jeezy/TI/etc. He comes from aughts trap and dungeon family.

I'm sure Future was inspired by Wayne in some ways but he's not a stylistic descendant in the same way the other guys are.

also gonna say nay at this point—I'm sure there's tons of posts arguing otherwise, but rap looks a lot different now than it did in 2014.

For rap specifically, Kanye's still certainly one of the most influential artists of the 21st century, but I think it's gotta be Wayne. I've always found it cool that Thug and Kendrick were massively influenced by Wayne and both became vastly different artists—not only from Wayne, but from each other. And as far as more superstars go (beyond Drake and Chance as WPG mentioned), Nicki Minaj is also a Wayne descendant.

Keef, Gucci, and Future are also good choices but they haven't been around as long. And it'll be interesting to see the trajectory of Thugger's offshoots.

not disagreeing brother @WPG (and @Donkey Kong Cuntry ok everybody meet mr me too , heh) but isnt chance a kanye clone? not denying wayne influence but always thought of him of tapping into that backpacker chicago lane, that derivative positive/musical s--- kanye embodied in the school trilogy

Chance was definitely influenced a lot by Kanye too, but listen to early Chance and you can hear the Wayne in his inflection/flow/voice cracks.

Listen to this song (or most specifically the passage that starts around 50 sec in) and you can hear it (especially when he says "I'm a kamikaze and I'm kinda cuckoo")

I’d say Chance and Drake are equally spawned from Wayne and Kanye.

And one other thing about Kanye's influence: I still see rappers trying their hand at these grandiose, A E S T H E T I C, statement/event albums that Kanye had and set the bar so high for from 2010-2013. Obviously he's not the only artist to ever make albums like that, but when I look at stuff like Big Sean's most recent album, Astroworld, Views...it sorta feels like they were chasing the dragon for their MBDTF.

well, i'd say chance borrows from both wayne and kanye: his actual style is rooted in wayne's music, but the sort of... presentation/branding/even sometimes his subject matter has a lot of kanye. that's fair.

i think that you can trace future's style in part back to songs like "prostitute flange," yes, but i wanted to avoid giving wayne total credit for that, as future was also almost definitely pulling from guys like rocko

Yeah fair enough, if anything I'd say Gucci/Jeezy/Rocko,etc, especially on those earlier tapes. Still, maybe not as clear a link to Wayne as Thug or Kendrick but definitely a strong influence.

Gucci debuted just a year after Kanye. I don't think you'd be too far off to throw him in the debate.

Yeah I should have said that applies more for Keef and Future—who are both descendants of Gucci in some respects for sure. If I had to pick three rappers who've been most influential since the year 2000 off the top of my head, it would be Wayne, Kanye, Gucci.

Soulja Boy is a sleeper pick for top 5 too.

soulja boy had some influence for sure but his legacy has been more about spotting trends than creating them. the sleeper you’re looking for is lil b

Honestly I've never heard more than 1-2 songs but my gut tells me absolutely not.
