Jun 13, 2018 well he’s always sold more than kanye though and judging 267 against even mmlp2, it’s a f---ing flop
Jun 13, 2018 Here's some hip-hop first week sales from 2018 for comparison. This was posted 3 weeks ago if you're wondering why anything is missing.
Jun 13, 2018 You could still track digital song plays, even if someone purchases an album instead of paying for a streaming service. Unless some weirdo buys a digital album then goes offline indefinitely. Tracking song plays/streams is more a more accurate representation of artist popularity than traditional sales
Jun 13, 2018 They actually changed the ratio so that "non-premium" streams need 3000 now I believe. Premium streams, as in people who actually pay for streaming services, need slightly less than 1500.
Jun 13, 2018 I remember reading about this. Just tried looking it up and everything I found still said 1500. You got a link?
Jun 13, 2018 With the upcoming changes, the Billboard 200 will count 1,250 streams as one album unit for paid subscription services. Free, ad-supported services will need 3,750 streams to equal one album unit. Free trial subscriptions that “offer the same access and functionality as a paid tier” will be counted the same as paid subscriptions. https://pitchfork.com/news/billboard-charts-change-to-count-paid-streams-more-than-free/
Jun 13, 2018 I can only imagine it does given that one category was more than doubled while the other was barely reduced. I guess. These are first week sales, not cumulative.
Jun 13, 2018 legit what's stopping labels from running 1000 instances of spotify on 1000 dummy accounts...on repeat all day long? guarantee you there's a hacker out there that would be extremely valuable to these companies.
Jun 13, 2018 Someday this may be a thing, but it's probably cheaper (and easier) to just buy physical albums. Let's say each song is on average 3 minutes (generous). 1000 Spotify accounts running 24 hours = 480,000 premium streams, which equals 384 album sales per day. If those ran all year, it'd be 140,160 in album sales. Artists used to do 1,000,000+ in a week. To achieve 1 million premium sales in one week, you'd need 372,023 Spotify accounts streaming songs (3 min) all week. Spotify is $10/mo. That's $3,720,230 for a month, or $930,057 for the week.
Jun 13, 2018 spotify is also free, so the cost could just as easily be $0 ...and the 1000 accounts thing was purely hypothetical -- it could just as easily be manipulated to be 100,000 accounts... which would equate to 32,000 sales / week. nothing to scoff at then. i'm sure spotify is smart, but hackers are always 1 step ahead when it comes to malicious preventative measures
