I used to like them when I was in my 'everything except for underground hip hop is s---' and 'the Illuminati is real' phases

Torture Papers was good, I still listen to a couple of tracks from time to time, along with other songs like Seven, War Ensemble etc. Everything after it is the same old "we're underground so we rule, f--- h---s etc" s---. How can you talk about underground rap nowadays where every rapper has his songs on spotify or datpiff or insert_site_here for everyone to listen to, I don't know. There are dudes rocking JMT shirts in the Balkans, so the whole "underground" thing is really played out dude, this isn't '95.

Army of the Pharaohs had a song featured in NBA Live's soundtrack pre-2010 (probably 2007). It was a good track and made me d/l the album, but I wouldn't call them underground, even if I thought that the term remained relevant today.

I never said they were underground.. it's true you can't really classify anyone as underground anymore but if you wanted to call them something you most certainly can't say they are mainstream famous selling 500,000 first week when an album drops.

I like rappers who put out what they feel like putting out instead of being fake as f--- and making songs just to sell and get rich

I made a greatest hits compilation out of their first three CDs in high school. Those Stoupe wannabes did their thing on production. We alternated between that and Gucci Mane, Gorilla Zoe, etc. Such a weird contrast. I, too, had that "real hip-hop" phase that kind of writes everything else off. How I feel about that mindstate reflects poorly on the music I was listening to. Revolutionary Vol. 2, Mic Club: The Curriculum, Kings in h--- Servants In Heaven, The High Exhaulted, The Darkest Cloud, Poison Pen, Liar and a Thief.... I shouldn't let my cringe at "le real hippity hops" taint my feelings towards it anymore. Loving it for that reason is just as bad as hating it for that reason.

Being a DZK Stan might be the saddest stretch of my fandom haha. Being a Rhyme Asylum Stan was far more respectable.

Yeah I assumed that because you said "mainstream", my b. Still, being "underground" or anti-mainstream is mainly the way they portray themselves, which is plain wrong. Also, 808's is the perfect example of a rapper putting out what he feels like. The songs where they don't go full r----- (racist/homophobic content or "f--- the mainstream" etc etc) aren't bad, and their production on their first 2 albums was great, same goes for JMT. Personally I listen to some Apathy, Celph Titled, and Czarface by Inspectah Deck and 7L & Esoteric was great, Idc about the rest of their crew though. They could make tracks like Into The Arms Of Angels but instead they focus more on other things which I don't really like.
