Feb 4, 2016 Dude was a hero of mine as a kid. So sad. BMX bike legend Dave Mirra -- who once had the record for the most X Games medals -- has died of an apparent suicide ... TMZ Sports has learned. Cops say the 41 year old's body was found in his truck in Greenville, North Carolina Thursday with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. We're told he had been in the area visiting with friends. Mirra leaves a wife and two kids. Officials tell TMZ Sports cops are investigating the death. Earlier Thursday, a photo of Mirra and his wife together appeared on Dave's Instagram account with the caption, "My Rock! Thank god." Mirra hosted 2 seasons of 'Real World/Road Rules Challenge' on MTV -- and was the namesake of several BMX video games. Mirra also drove for Subaru rally car racing team. Dave's good friend and fellow BMX legend T.J. Lavin tells us ... "I just wish he would have called me. I would have jumped on a plane in a second. There's always another way. Feb 4, 2016 Police in Greenville, North Carolina, announced BMX legend Dave Mirra died Thursday. Local authorities are still investigating the incident and noted an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound was the preliminary cause of death. Shortly before his death, Mirra shared a photo of himself and his wife, Lauren: davemirra My rock! Thank god! "We mourn the loss today of a great friend and wonderful human being who touched the lives of so many around the world with his gift," Greenville Mayor Allen Thomas said. "He called Greenville, North Carolina, home and was as humble a guy talking with kids on a street corner about bikes as he was in his element on the world stage." The 41-year-old Mirra was a fixture of the X Games as the event was gaining traction in the late 1990s and early 2000s. According to the X Games' official website, he won 14 gold, six silver and four bronze medals. The 24 combined medals are the second-most in X Games history behind Bob Burnquist's 27.

Feb 4, 2016 When I was really young I used to BMX and go to skateparks with my neighbors in the street. When we got home we would play this for hours on end very strange he shot himself.
