does posthumous music ever work?

I don't think I've ever seen this thread made but I got the urge to see how others feel about this.

One great thing that the new Kendrick album did was made me go through 2Pac's whole discography for 5 days straight now even though I dislike the Mortal Man skit.

Along with that, I also listened to his Greatest Hits which might be the only hits album I could ever listen to and makes sense to me.

Changes came on, which I haven't heard in a long a--- time and it reminded me how powerful the song is, to me at least. I then got a sense that it's not a song that the original artist had in mind, but still really worked, was well received, praised, nominated and remains a fan favorite especially for people who aren't even that much into rap.

How important is an artist's original intention in regard to the final outcome of a product? Does the fact that it was changed in any way take away from the experience for you, that it was actually "manipulated" without the person's knowledge or final say?

One thing is a song, another is an album where sequencing and etc. comes into play. The 7 Day theory was released after 2Pac's death also, I'm no expert or hardcore fan so I can't really say if the way he recorded it and intended the release.

I myself always felt much adoration for someone who takes pride and attention to detail to the final product they release, it makes me enjoy something that much more for some reason and I'm sure I'm not alone on this. The fact that I would hear that something was finished without the artist's final say or was a half assed attempt would always make me disregard the work, but then you get the material I mentioned, like Changes, 7 Day Theory, handful of stuff I don't remember at this moment and I can't see myself treating it as inferior.

Therefore, can posthumous songs, albums work, be respected, treated as classic even? If so, do you attribute that achievement to the artist or person(s) who was responsible for it's final aesthetic?

    Thoughts?

You'll enjoy it as much as you did when it was released. I know I do everytime I go back to listen to it.

I think posthumous releases are insulating when constructed and released haphazardly. Em's Tupac album was a butchering on every level. Eazy E's wasn't anything special either. They at least make sense for artists like Tupac who had so much back inventory.

Here's an interesting song about the topic:

If it's done right, then yes. I am not a fan of posthumous music tho. I feel like the artist couldn't perfect it how they want to.

If 2pac's music was released the way he made it then yes. All those albums with s--- beats were disrespectful to his legacy. Hopefully the OG versions in cd quality will be released one day

Yeah, but the first posthumous album, "Michael" was a disaster, not only were half the songs not Michael, but the person who sang them, although a good singer, sounded absolutely nothing like him, absolute travesty.

7 Day Theory though, was it released exactly as he intended? Do you like it? If you found out it was released how he had in mind, would it take away anything you attribute to the album?

Only way a posthumous album can succeed is if the artist has recorded and finalised the track list exactly how it's meant to be and the CD is in mixing/mastering process. Then of course the only remaining thing the deceased artist could be in disagreement with would be the mixing/mastering quality. If it's not created by the artist don't release it as a project. If they have songs sitting around that were 100% finalized/mixing/masterered, sure, release those in a collection or something but don't try and create an album from the dead.

If Top Dawg organised Kendrick's murder after he has finished and submitted his next album for release it would be a great marketing scheme lol. Sad we have to think someone has to die to be immortalised though.

Not gonna lie though. No disrespect but Pac and Biggie were both involved in s--- that could get them killed. Kendrick's a good kid, he don't deserve to die for nothing. Biggie and Pac were kind of digging into trouble.
