Blade Runner 2022 was written and directed by Shinichiro Watanabe (“Cowboy Bebop”), and also features music from Miguel Atwood Ferguson and Kuedo. It takes place in between Ridley Scott’s original 1982 film (set in 2019) and the upcoming sequel (set in 2049), according to Anime News Network. Watch a behind the scenes look at the animation below. The animated short marks the third prequel to be released ahead of the sequel. Jared Leto previously starred in the first, 2036: Nexus Dawn, and Dave Bautista starred in the second, 2048: Nowhere to Run. Both were directed by Scott’s son Luke. Blade Runner 2049 is out October 6. It stars Harrison Ford (reprising his role as Rick Deckard) and Ryan Gosling. The upcoming sequel was supposed to feature a score by Jóhann Jóhannsson, but he was reportedly removed from the project.
