The masses are definitely paying homage to hip-hop’s late 90s icons. First it was a Notorious B.I.G statue in Brooklyn, and now, every June 16th will be known as Tupac Shakur Day in Oakland, Calif.

Hip-hop advocate LeRoy McCarthy confirmed the news to Okayplayer earlier today (June 15). Reportedly, McCarthy helped draft the language of the resolution, and additionally got confirmation from Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf’s office that the late rapper’s birthday will indeed be honored as his day for the city.

Pac wasn’t from Oakland, but throughout his career and life he showed much love to the Bay Area city. Initially he got his start with the Oakland-based crew Digital Underground.

“Although Tupac was born in Harlem, New York City in 1971, later lived in Baltimore, Maryland, and in Marin City, California, he cherished his time in Oakland as his home, stating that he got his ‘Game’ from Oakland,” reads the proclamation from the Mayor’s office. “Tupac once said: ‘…I give all my love to Oakland, if I’ma claim somewhere I’ma claim Oakland.’”

The accolade is definitely well deserved, yet nostalgic considering the recent loss of Pac’s mother Afeni Shakur.

    Rest easy, Queen and King!
