@Twan nice to still see love for the Witch! And I caught up on Under the Shadow recently which, while the horror elements didn't quite work for me, I dug a lot.

@Dew I second Natalie Portman being absolutely excellent in Jackie

I've yet to see Moonlight and Certain Women still, but as of now Manchester remains my favorite of the year!

@Papa Andy I'll link you to a vimeo of it. Seemed to go mostly under the radar after we programmed it for VIFF, but hopefully it works for you like it did me. Use some d--- good speakers/surround if possible because the sound design will make or break it for you.

@FilmAndWhisky Dope list as expected. Very interesting that you went with both Stewart and Williams from Certain Women for Supporting Actress. I liked both, but I thought Gladstone was definitely the standout.

ReverseShot posted its best of 2016 list last week (http://reverseshot.org/series/entry/2292/best_of_2016) and followed up today with their 11 Offenses. http://reverseshot.org/series/entry/2298/offenses_of_2016

The offenses are pretty brutal, but there are only 2 films there I would really go to bat for (Midnight Special, h--- or High Water), so I guess that's not too bad. I liked Jackie too, but I had my reservations.

Love Reverse Shot, but how people found Neon Demon controversial is beyond me. They say it makes women look bad when the entire movie is about s-----y Hollywood scum. Everybody looks bad. Keanu's character is a child r--ist. All of the male characters salivate over a child. Everyone is superficial and petty, not just the women. f--- off with fitting everything into current social topics. The movie is dead simple. At least the "style over substance" argument is reality based, though kind of old hat with Refn at this point.

Same s---, different movie. Funny how such a large sect of the film community antagonizes Refn and similar artists for not being substantive, only to cling on to the same condescending buzzwords that do nothing to deconstruct any of the interpretations people have made about their work. I've got no issue with narrative viewers who have a hard time watching Neon Demon or other comparable's, but I do with those who make up such sweeping, derogatory statements like that.

Watch the commentary. Read an analysis or two. Look at what influenced it. Context coincides with other perspectives, and neither have anything to do with whatever sociopolitical insecurities these morons clearly have. Drive/OGF fans getting on their high horse about Neon Demon (formally, thematically, morally) is the most clear case of critical hypocrisy I've ever seen. Refn hasn't changed a bit.

/rant. What a joke.

"Empty" is the new "pretentious" as far as completely valueless criticism goes. That word clues you in to exactly how little people tried to enjoy it. It couldn't be more obvious as a take on giallo which cleverly sets Dracula/Bathory type material against Hollywood's toxic obsession with youth and beauty. Anybody and their mother should be able to tell that much. Instead, people rattle off the usual talking points about Refn being a shallow formalist like they've never seen any of his movies before he worked with Gosling.

Have you read/seen Mike Leigh's Abigail's Party? I remember Louis saying it inspired Horace & Pete. That show just bored/depressed me too much to get passed an episode or two though. @Vahn

Half of my favorite movies are depressing, but something about Horace & Pete being a static shot like a stage play half the time made it so dreary and dull. The lack of ambient noise as well. I get that it's intended, but at that point why not just do an actual play?

I don't think it was for me regardless. I'm kind of tired of comedians being faux philsophic pessimists and I'm already so familiar with Louis that it breaks emersion whenever he clearly takes a bit of stand up and repurposes it. Honestly miss when he made lighter stuff like Lucky Louie. Less grating.
