    I'm a little slow...what's this mean??

For the record, against all of my defenses, I must concede that A Star is Born is pretty cool.

lol I don't know why I was expecting irony.

But yeah, I dug it too, though I haven't seen any of the 3 previous versions.

      All Good 2018
      ★★★½ Watched 05 Oct, 2018

Aenne Schwarz' restrained performance sustains this subtle character study of a woman trying to hold it all in. Hand camera realism draws closer as Trobisch examines relationships, power dynamics, harassment, and the problematic social practices which tie it all together.

      75/100 - Very Good.

Long Day’s Journey into Night 2018
      ★★★½ Watched 04 Oct, 2018

A sensory pleasure which evokes the liminality of wake, dream, revelation, and memory.

At once, the film carries a surrealistic aesthetic as well as a spiritualistic one. When begins the 3D one shot, a dream-like trip through time unveils hidden facets of human imagination and creation and our vulnerability to the unbeknownst.

      77/100 - Very Good (3.5)

    Burning 2018
    ★★★ Watched 08 Oct, 2018

A bit too muted and implicit for my taste but it is interesting to see a thriller done with such tact and nuance. It's a nice twist on a South Korean standard which doesn't brutalize the audience or even clue them in very often. It's quite literary, and I think the lack of an inner voice to help ferry us through the thought process which you find in a novel conveys our protagonist's lack of thought, as does Yoo Ah-in's slack jawed performance. Only upon beginning to finally write does he find agency in the story. I admire it, but sitting through it was kind of a chore.

    In My Skin 2002
    ★★★★ Watched 06 Oct, 2018

A film about economic anxieties whether they be the rapid pace of globalization or the increasingly precarious state of labor or the alienating effect of competition redefining social relations, a reality in which the only way to sooth these worries is to consume, here a literal consummation of the self, an apt allegory for the self-destructive nature of capitalism.

Yeah! It’s a classic Hollywood melodrama. Pretty successful and satisfying, I suspect bc so many of cooper’s Choices as a director are grounded in reality: chappelles actual daughter, his actual dog, Gaga drag origins etc.

    I’ve also recently watched:
Spider Baby - dope, I just met Sid Haig too. Wish I’d asked him about working with Lon Chaney
Curse of the Werewolf- also dope! Love hammer gothic style, and how lycanthropy is a metaphor for inherited sin and sexual compulsion

I'm one of those few people who still gets DVDs from Netflix...

Given that recent UN report which indicated the potential for global crisis by 2040 and given that it's October, it seemed like a good time to watch a climate change-based horror film. :jordan:

Pretty cool that the Coens got carte blanche from Netflix and made an unrelentingly bleak anthology on death.

Hour of the Wolf looked incredible before, can only imagine now.

My first experience after getting my 4K TV was coming home from work, opening the Netflix app, clicking on what I thought to be another lame Netflix comedy, only to see the Coen's name on a film I had no idea was coming. It was out of this world man.

Even more impressive is how much joyous energy the first 45 minutes or so have. Then the segment with the limbless dude hits and everything changes.

Had no clue these Paddington movies were getting such good reviews. At least via the Tomatometer and Metacritic. Huh

They're immaculately well made tbh. They're incredibly sweet and funny family films made with Wes Anderson-esque precision. The second one in particular is just superbly crafted. I walked out of the theater with a smile on my face and (no joke) a warm feeling inside.
