I remember this time well. Perhaps this was one of the best times for the development of rap and hip-hop. Akon, Lil Wayne, Kanye West, 50 Cent and a lot of cool rap. Even Eminem sometimes released something, several tracks a year, and these tracks sounded cooler than all that he releases today.

Eminem recorded the best rap album of all time King Mathers LP, which he never released. I'm still waiting since 2007 when he releases King Mathers LP.

    Timbaland!!!
So many cool memories and how much cool music at that time ...!

This period reminds me of something from that time when I listened to a lot of other music and rap had a very good development.

It really s----d, because it was the worst era of rap ever for the majority of the hiatus... Encore was structured like a quasi-retirement album too, so some thought he might be done for good. There was talk of “King Mathers,” but all of that came from Ca$his. There were rumors of Eminem being on drugs, but I don’t think fans really knew it was as bad as it was. When he OD’d it was reported in the news as pneumonia... It felt like a really long break... much longer than the break between MMLP2 and Revival, even though they were close to the same length. We were never sure if we were getting another album until Relapse and Relapse 2 were announced.

It was a horrible period. We got some Em songs sparingly. Most were trash. We did get some good verses like Emulate, but mostly filler. I would ask myself how was such a genius who made incredible music a few years prior putting out this garbage? Especially at the high level he was once at. That all changed October 2008 when I'm Having a Relapse dropped. I didn't care about the accent, I was happy his rhyme schemes were fire again. But during that whole period, album rumors would drop, but nothing happened. In hindsight it was for the best. King Mathers would have s----d. So he waited and we got Relapse when he was back to himself again. But still, he did have good music here and there.

Don't forget we got the re-up and we were just grasping for any kind of good verse ... i wanted to like it but ... he was way gone at that point. The only good track was a 2002 throwaway (first two verses) no apologies.

the tupac album, and curtain call....

sprinkled in with some of the most horrible features ever

    trick trick
    akon
    my ballz
    touchdown....

christ... this is depressing just typing this.... just waiting for years was horrible. All my friends from college who loved him during his peak (99-03) had moved on by 09

I honestly felt he was done and never coming back after Curtain Call. It was such a stale time for an Em fan. I don't think the public really fell for his whole pneumonia excuse for ODing. I remember bein' scared he'd OD and die after that until he got sober. I remember the D.A.R.E. police standing in front of our class referencing Eminem recently checking into rehab after cancelling his European shows. They only mentioned it because that was in the town I grew up in. My mother saw an "Anger-management Tour III" van driving down main street during his two week period there, thought that was awesome as a kid, haha. I vividly remember his Hot 97 interview talking about King Mathers, at the time he didn't give the title but did say it was his final album. I know there wasn't much information at all about King Mathers least from my memory. It was a crazy era but nothing beats the f---ing build up from The Way I Am book premiere to Relapse! f---in' epic! Eminem's HUGE comeback but we all know what ended up happening...

Nobody besides his hardcore fans noticed

Yeah there was a gap between solo studio albums and people were waiting on it, but certain songs from Encore and Curtain Call stretched for years after release. I heard Shake That, Mockingbird, and One Last Time in passing constantly up until late 2007. Far more than any Eminem song today.

The singles/guest appearances, mainly Smack That kept him out here. I remember The Re Up very well, you either liked it or you didnt. It felt like a new Eminem release to me though. Yeah, not full length album wise, but he was productive. The only time it felt like there was a glaring absence was mid 2008. By then you could really say that he was inactive for well over a year. But with his book and the eventual relapse announcement late that year it didnt matter

The “hiatus” was mostly a marketing campaign. By many other artists standards what he did was not a hiatus. Ironically the gap between MMLP2 and Revival actually felt excruciatingly longer to me. For 2015 he drops two singles and a sway freestyle. For almost all of 2016 he was dead silent and featureless. Drops Campaign Speech and then goes dead silent for literally another year until late December 2017 with the most horribly marketed album in his career.

I herd EM in 99 when he came out. I never thought the hiatus was THAT bad. Bc from a release standpoint, he had material release almost annually
    99-SSLP
    00-MMLP
    01-devils night
    02-Eminem Show
03-8 mile soundtrack. Features on cheers, and GRODT
    04- Encore, D12 World
    05- Curtain Call
    06- Re Up
    07
    08(announced album)
    09 relapse and refill
    10 recovery
    11 HTS
    12
    13- MMLP2
    14- Shady Xv
    15-SouthPaw soundtrack
    16
    17- Revival
    18-Kamikaze

Plus all the features hes had. He hasnt really gone a long time without having ANY material out. Theres just gaps between solo albums. Only thing I hated during the 04 to 09 hiatus was the rise of the south. I'm from Louisville so I've always herd it. And I don't mean all of the south but alot of the dance songs, and the f---ing syrup soundtracks that rose to popularity around that time annoyed me. But I always feel like ppl over exaggerate his hiatus'
