It was great, he did the whole album then some other songs from Sun's Tirade and House is Burning. And he did Not Like Us at the end again, while crowd was hype, Atlanta would never go against Team Future lol

    First Listen Review:
Like Omar Little (won’t let me tag you for some reason), Isaiah Rashad has always been an artist where I always say “yeah I need to check him out”, but I never did so until now. I’ve heard a couple songs, both I believe are from his latest release The House Is Burning, and I liked them, so I’m not sure why it took me this long to tap in. I’m glad I started here with Cilvia Demo because it is FANTASTIC. I was prepared for something good but I got more than I expected PLUS some. Strong lyricism, amazing beat selection, guest appearances that enhance the feelings of the songs, and a nice, easy listen clocking in at just under 50 minutes. This album is 10 years old, but it sounds like it could’ve just came out 10 days ago. Beautifully aged. While some songs were definitely stronger than others, I still enjoyed every song and threw a like on each of them. No skips whatsoever, but tracks like R.I.P. Kevin Miller are much stronger than tracks like Webbie Flow (U Like). This is all off first listen though, so anything can change, as I feel like I’ll listen to this album front to back many more times. Also, I’m glad to learn that Zay comes from Chattanooga, Tennessee, just a few hours out from where I am from! Thanks for the pick @jankland!

    hargydon’s Review of Cilvia Demo

I was already a fan of this project by Mr. Rashad before going into this, probably the most out of his discography, as @jankland been pushing this album like he’s paid commission on it.

It’s raw, it’s grimy. A good mesh of old school hip-hop roots mixed with soul & modern Southern elements, new style deliveries, choruses & themes. My only gripe about the production is that it wasn’t mixed by MixedByAli.

TDE really was an unstoppable force back in the day. Kendrick, Q, Ab-Soul, SZA, Jay Rock & Isaiah.

    Standouts:

    Cilvia Demo
    Ronnie Drake (favourite song)
    Soliloquy (2nd favourite song)
    Heavenly Father
    Banana
    Shot You Down

I’m still confused as to why SZA isn’t credited on Heavenly Father & Banana lol

Some lyrics have aged very well like:

I know you feel the rush f---ing with a n----- b------s rarely ever get to touch

    Never skirt chase

Jokes aside, the lyrical content throughout is very dark & depressive. Even when it isn’t explicitly touched on, it still spells out that way as he delves into degeneracy just to enjoy himself — it’s a great reflection of the mind state he’s trying to paint on here. The music is also a great tonal companion for the subject matter explored, low energy straight-talking veering on monotone at times. Although it matches the concept, that can make a full listening experience quite fatiguing at times. Shot You Down being the exception lol.

    Lyric of the album:

Came a long way from a boat and an auction
Now, we got names and a vote, then a coffin

    Rating: 7/10

My advanced autism makes it so if I find something I believe to be good then I have to sell it to the point of it backfiring and creating apathy. It's pretty epic!

    Skips: Modest, Brad Jordan

    Final Thoughts:
Cilvia Demo is a thoughtfully crafted album that delves deep into grim themes of personal struggle, addiction, and the possibility of redemption, all while showcasing his distinctive voice and engaging flow. "Hereditary" is a brief yet impactful intro that sets the thematic and sonic tone for the rest of the project.

Collaborations with SZA on "Ronnie Drake" and "West Savannah" are certainly highlights, even if I prefer the latter.

Isaiah's talent for creating captivating melodies is evident in tracks like "Webbie Flow (U Like)" and the title track. Both songs feature hooks that stay with you long after the music ends. "RIP Kevin Miller" is a standout track, serving as a poignant tribute where Isaiah distinguishes his personal struggles from the larger issue of addiction, offering a nuanced perspective on his experiences.

All in all, while I honestly hadn't heard of him before, Cilvia Demo does a good job of establishing Isaiah Rashad in the hip-hop landscape with its introspective lyrics, consistent production, and catchy melodies, making it a compelling listen on personal and thematic levels. Even if at times it feels a tad repetitive and redundant.

    hargydon’s Album of the Week

    J Hus: Big Conspiracy

    upload_2024-5-26_22-30-25.jpeg

    Apple Music description:

"I was fresh from a war but it was internal/Every day I encounter another hurdle," J Hus spits as he closes Big Conspiracy on the piano-led "Deeper Than Rap". That war, and the highs and lows of Momodou Jallow's life, make for a mesmerising second album. Lyrics address his incarceration, street life, God, violence, his African roots and colonialism. From others those themes would feel heavy, but delivered in J Hus' effortless voice, with a flow that switches frequently, they stun.

The references are playful, too-Mick Jagger and Woody Woodpecker are mentioned on "Fortune Teller" and Destiny's Child get a recurrent role in the standout "Fight for Your Right". Hus is backed by inventive instrumentation encompassing delicate strings, Afrobeats, reggae and hip-hop and nods to garage and Dr. Dre's work with 50 Cent, while Koffee and Burna Boy contribute to the celebratory feel on "Repeat" and "Play Play". This is a record as diverse, smart and vibrant as anything coming from the UK right now.

    Hope everyone enjoys!
