May 2, 2026 at 11:38 AM Tried getting into Wake by Hail the Sun and I feel like I should like this more than I actually do. There’s clear talent here. The drumming is insane throughout, almost distracting with how busy it gets. The vocals bring a chaotic post-hardcore energy that works in short bursts but wears on you over a full listen. It feels like every track is trying to peak at once. Some favourites for me: • “Falling on Deaf Ears” • “Relax/Divide” • “Human Target Practice” • “Cosmic Narcissism” • “Anti Eulogy” Least favourites: • “Missed Injections” • “The People That Protect Us” • “Jane Doe” These feel the most controlled while still hitting the intensity the band is going for, while the weaker cuts start to feel more exhausting than engaging and don’t stand out as much. Biggest issue is cohesion and dynamics. It rarely slows down or gives anything room to breathe, so it starts to blur together instead of building toward something memorable. It’s more impressive than enjoyable. Feels like one of those albums where if you already love this style, you’ll be into it. If not, this probably won’t convert you. Not bad, and there’s enough here that I can see myself revisiting certain tracks. Rating: 7/10 @AOTWClub
May 2, 2026 at 11:48 AM Btw @Justin Trudeau Do I still have a spot for album pick? Forgot the exact date.
May 2, 2026 at 2:02 PM I agree with pretty much all of this, really comes down to if the all gas barely any brakes pacing clicks with you or not. I've seen the sentiment from some people that they're a band they can only listen to in chunks with a song or two off of each album and I totally understand why. Happy you gave it a fair shake!

May 3, 2026 at 10:11 PM @AOTWClub Wake - Hail the Sun Review: Post hardcore isn’t a genre I’m very familiar with, but it’s something I can appreciate in small doses. There are a lot of melodic elements on this album that I really enjoyed, even though they often change quickly between chaotic and more emotional sections. The drumming stands out as a highlight. Easily one of the strongest parts of the record. At times, the album feels very intense. The constant energy can be a plus, but it can also become somewhat draining during certain sections. Slightly less shifting and chaos might have helped the overall balance. Overall, this probably isn’t an album I would return to often, but there are definitely moments that stood out, particularly in the first half. It feels like the kind of record that either clicks with you or doesn’t and when it does, it really hits. For me, those moments came in short but enjoyable bursts before quickly shifting back into chaos. AOTY has this labeled as ''Swancore'' which I learned is a subgenre of Post Hardcore. Metal really does have a subgenre for everything. I’m sure they’re still inventing new ones as we speak. An interesting pick overall, and it’s always fun to check out bands I haven’t listened to before. 6.5/10
May 4, 2026 at 12:55 AM @AOTWClub Metallica - ...And Justice for All Review: I hadn’t listened to this album in so long. It came out right before Metallica became truly mainstream, and it often gets talked about less than Ride the Lightning or Master of Puppets but honestly, it’s just as good. To address the obvious. This album’s biggest flaw is the near total absence of bass. You can blame that on the absolute goof of a drummer who had it stripped from the mix. Sometimes I wonder what this record would’ve sounded like with the bass properly included, but at the same time, I think that missing bass gives it a unique identity. It sounds raw, cold, and hits different because of it. I also love this album cover, it looks sick. The album kicks off with one of their best songs, in my opinion. “Blackened” is incredible and it has my favorite Metallica solo. That second part is insanely technical. For all the criticism Metallica gets for becoming overly commercial later on, there’s no denying how strong their songwriting and solos were throughout the 80s and even beyond. …And Justice for All is another standout. It’s definitely long, but it flows really well overall and has some nice transitions. “One” is obviously a masterpiece. It’s brilliantly written, but it’s been played so much that I don’t really go out of my way to listen to it. Still, there’s no denying how great it is. “Harvester of Sorrow” is one of my favorites on the album. It’s just a heavy, badass song. ‘To Live and To Die’’ is another nearly 10 minute song. Like the title track, it stays engaging and has smooth transitions. Some great riffs, an incredible melody. Dyer’s Eve is another b-----r which ends the album perfectly. Like Eminem, Metallica isn’t something I keep in regular rotation anymore. I’ve simply played them too much over the years. But they’re still one of those bands I’ll always return to every so often, because their music never really loses its impact. Overall, this album is raw, complex and has some of their most impressive songwriting. Metallica in this era had an incredible ability to structure songs into distinct sections, each flowing naturally into the next, with multiple memorable moments throughout. Even with its well known flaws this album stands right alongside their best work. 9.5/10
