Dec 8, 2015 We know that T-Pain was involved in the writing of Kanye West's 808s & Heartbreak, but last he spoke about it, he revealed that 'Ye had dismissed his ideas as "weak," even recording a strange "diss" track in the midst of the sessions. Still, according to Pain, the album was very much shaped by his own album, Rappa Ternt Sanga, which celebrated its 10th anniversary this week. Speaking to Billboard, Pain referred to 808s as a "direct copy" of his debut when speaking about the extensive influence of the album. "I’m not just being a d-ck saying that s--- sounds a lot like mine," the hitmaker clarified. "Like literally [Kanye] told me that he listened to Rappa Ternt Sanga and he made 808s & Heartbreak". Pain then revealed that he got involved with the project simply to give 'Ye that specific feel. "He even brought me in to make it sound more like Rappa Ternt Sanga. [Laughs.] Something that I did that was directly copied got so many awards -- that’s evidence right there." Do we need to give T-Pain's debut more credit?
Dec 8, 2015 Honestly I don't care either way though, 808s is (and will forever remain) high on my all-time list. No matter how much influence T-Pain had on 808s, it's still very much a Kanye album.
Dec 8, 2015 I felt like it was inspired more by Arca than Death Grips. But i do see some Death Grips-esque elements, yeah.
Dec 9, 2015 i mean, it's not a direct copy, but it's kinda sample flipping on the most macro scale: take t-pain's style and employ it in some other pursuit. listen to 808s. listen to Rappa Ternt Sanga. they're not the same album by any means. but with over a decade of seeing how kanye's creative mind works, it's not that hard to draw the line from one to the other. yeah this wasn't true in 2013 and it isn't true now. it doesn't even sound that influenced by death grips.
Dec 9, 2015 eh from what I've heard of them, death grips are near unlistenable for me most of the time, and Yeezus is thoroughly enjoyable and melodic
Dec 9, 2015 ok just not really seeing the comparison beyond the obvious (synths, hip hop, distortion)
Dec 9, 2015 I love rappa ternt sanga. it's been so long since I've listened to it though. I gotta do that again sometime
Dec 9, 2015 I've only heard t-pain's first album fully and that was ages ago. @WPG point me to T-Pain's best project lol
