Jan 10, 2021 I feel like I used to be so much better at producing ideas when I was a kid. Something I hate about being in a creative field is this pressure to always come up with something new. I also hate when I spend time researching and doing work so that I can pitch an article, only for it to get passed on by an editor. I mean I guess part of the problem is that I didn't have a beat per se until I started writing about music. Now I get people pitching me lol. Any strategies you guys use?

Jan 10, 2021 Word. Reading does help but like the idea of reading a whole book to get a kernel of an idea bugs me lol. I also remember reading a whole book on circuses really early in my career and had this really detailed pitch and no one cared. And I was like why did I just waste like two weeks reading and researching all that. I guess it can’t really be helped. Maybe I should read more newspapers. Goodluck with Complex and Paper!
Jan 11, 2021 for me honestly i just write/think of things i would like to read. then obviously consider the news cycle, the outlet, standard stuff like that. but if something interests me or im intrigued about that i havent read elsewhere, thats where i begin in terms of pitch. "what would i want to read rn"
Jan 11, 2021 I wouldn’t think of reading a book as research for one article—you never know what will stick with you and pop out months or years down the line. Plus it’s inspiration. For pretty much any writer I think reading is just as important as the writing itself. And I’m gonna second what Andy said: when you have a question about something, do a little research to see what’s out there and then pitch it. If you’re curious about it, other people probably are too.
Jan 11, 2021 @Altereagle416 I just recommended this to @Antman —this is probably the most inspiring book I’ve read when it comes to music writing (and period tbh). He also wrote a book about A Tribe Called Quest that’s great.
