Firstly if this is in the wrong place or whatever then apologies just move or delete.

So, I'm looking for some advise and I decided to come here for it, I'll get straight into it. I'm speaking to this girl from my work and it's been just over a week we have been talking. We are getting on really well but I didn't ask her out on a date or anything yet as she is leaving for a few days to see family so I was waiting til after she's back. To help describe the situation I'd say that I'm a 7/8 but she is honestly a 10. Like, all my mates can't believe that I'm speaking to her, I'm punching well above my weight.

So I'll get to the problem. Yesterday, I got a message from my mate. Let me say, we're mates but not really close mates if you get me. The message was telling me that he has set me up big time and all that. I was like, wtf you on about? So he explained that he has set me up on a double date with her mate and him next Saturday night. Sounds harsh but I think her mate is there to support her type thing.

I mean, I'm happy but I just don't really understand how they work. A normal date would have been better so I could get to know her. This is where the stupid questions start coming in. Is a double date like a normal date Just with another couple next to you? Do you speak to everyone at the table? I don't understand how you are supposed to flirt and s--- with those two next to us.

Finally thanks to anyone who could be bothered to read that. I know it sounds pathetic.

I’m in a similar situation. No double date involved but i recently met a girl, well out of my league, that was going away to see family for a couple weeks. I actually decided to ask her out before she left, determined to make sure she was thinking about me . It seemed to work, she’s messaged me every day she’s been away and we already have plans for when she’s back.

Anyway, asfor double dates, I’ve only been on one and it was awkward as h---. Make sure you set up conversation boundaries with your mate. There are probably some things you don’t want coming up when you’re both trying to make a good impression.

I think location/activity is very important to consider. Sitting down for dinner as a group is nice but would some kind of group activity be a bit more fun?

The most important rule to remember is not to try and switch dates halfway through... they don’t like that


Edit: as for flirting, as long as you and your mate aren’t awkward around each other, ditto for her and hers, it shouldn’t be a problem. If anything it might make you a bit more reserved, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing on a first date.

I did a double date once, and she's now my wife.

I don't want to give you advice, I'm just going to tell you my experience with it. The biggest takeaways for me were just to introduce myself, make sure I exchanged numbers and information with her and just be yourself. Another takeaway for me was to let the couple who suggested or initiated the double date idea be in charge socially. I'm not the type to takeover a social situation, especially if I don't need to. My wife was interested in dating me, otherwise she wouldn't of come with her friend.

I think a double date may be a bit ill-advised as a first date with this girl. I always saw them for more established couples as you're still trying to get to know this girl away from work. Maybe try and tell your mate that it may not be as good an opportunity as it seems. It's always gonna be hard to impress her in this kinda scenario

Thanks for the replies guys. The problem is that in stuck with this double date now. No other option as can't bail now. I was thinking the same. Seems hard to impress her when the other 2 are there.
