May 23, 2017 f---, you completely destroyed the validity of this by including BIG WEENIE as the first song on your list.
May 23, 2017 The best song since Eminem's come back is DEJAVU... Coming off the train-wreck that was Encore (2004) and a 5 year hiatus (in large part due to his severe drug addiction) Relapse was supposed to be Eminem’s comeback. Yea about that…Instead we were greeted with a 38 year old rapping in the now infamous accent about his twisted murder fantasies. To put it nicely; Relapse was a disaster—sure it shows flashes of brilliances but more or less it’s plagued by a combination of horrendous advice* and sloppy writing.**Regardless, somehow in the midst of these confused recording sessions Eminem was able to create this absolute masterpiece. I’m just going to say it—Déjà vu is a top 3 Eminem song and perhaps the most rewarding aspect is its ability to exist in isolation. It’s not reminiscent of the man who created drugged-out cartoon narratives, nor the deeply personal introspective writer who literally screamed to ensure you heard his story. No, this man could give two ****s if you listened—honestly it sounds like he could care less about what he’s even saying—all of which is quite shocking because this may be Eminem’s most personal record to date. For most artists the sarcastic tone would derail the song completely, but for the Detroit native it only makes his story more weirdly desirable to hear. Bizarrely distant, Mr. Mathers nonchalantly documents his near death experience and own flawed rationale—even justifying his pill addiction to overcome the death of his best friend Proof. “Wouldn’t even be takin’ this **** if Desean didn’t die/ oh yea there’s an excuse, you lose Proof so you use/ there’s new rules, it’s cool if it’s helping you to get through.” Throughout the three terrific verses Mathers takes us through his hectic world of drug addiction—admitting that his hospital visit; for what we previously thought was pneumonia, was actually an overdose of a mixture of pain killers and sleeping pills. This is all capped off by the beautifully written chorus (my vote for his best ever), which depicts a man clearly able to identify his own flaws, but is seemingly hopeless when it comes to solving them. The pain and sorrow demonstrated in the hook undoubtedly runs parallel to his journey of addiction, but is written in broad enough terms for nearly anybody to relate to. “Kinda feels like déjà vu/ I wanna get away from this place I do/ but I can’t and I won’t, say I try, but I know that’s a lie/ cause I don’t and why I just don’t know.” Déjà vu is flawless in every sense of the word and it’s truly a shame it will forever be overlooked because of its association with “post-prime Eminem.”*** *As the legend goes Eminem asked Dr. Dre’s son (of all people) what the public wanted to hear from him. The answer: “We want you to go crazy again.” **Eminem has always had a pretty weird obsession with technical writing (i.e. rhyme schemes, multisyllabic rhyming, etc.) but Relapse was simply overboard. Admittedly some of the rhyme schemes on Relapse are borderline genius, but who really cares when you have to sacrifice the content to do so. ***The general public is very dismissive of modern day Eminem and deservedly so, but he has proven he is still capable of making great and even classic songs. (My Darling, Cocaine, Going Through Changes, The Warning, Bad Guy, Brainless, etc.)
May 23, 2017 I think objectively there are better tracks made since his comeback. However, When I'm Gone has been my favorite song of his since its release so I agree personally. I do however think he hasn't captured that raw emotion in the 12 years since this song. I was hoping Headlights was going to but that was a major letdown for an apology to his mother. Maybe if we are lucky he still has a song left in him where he captures that type of emotion.
May 23, 2017 Two things: I never knew (or forgot) Em asked Dre's son what the world wanted to hear from him. If that is true, that is a nice little tidbit of knowledge. Also, that last bit about him still making classic records....it truly frustrates the f--- out of me. Call me crazy or a delusional Stan but I honestly think that Recovery and MMLP2 would have been close to on par as his prime albums. Recovery, I can deal with. It is great for what it is. There probably were better tracks left off that record. MMLP2, I think that was a disaster simply based on his track selection. I am sure he has songs that he left off that record that were on par with Brainless, Bad Guy Pt.2, Groundhog Day, Beautiful Pain, and Rap God. He is making too many songs for his albums. He should focus on crafting a smaller amount of songs for them.
May 23, 2017 I really hate the third verse on this song... I can think of a bunch better than it, including almost every song on Recovery.
