Aug 21, 2021 (edit: for those who don't know, Andrew Barber founded the influential Chicago rap blog Fake Shore Drive and manages Valee.) Dunno if we have a general thread for Gibbs' next album but:
Aug 21, 2021 i was thinking about this the other day - would you rather hear the next Freddie x Madlib album or the next Freddie x Alc album? then i remembered he already mentioned the next one's gonna have a bunch of different producers lol. Eitherway no question its gonna be straight heat
Aug 21, 2021 I’ve been saying he’s obv due to drop very soon. He’s on an all time run right now so I expect it to be great. 10/10? I hope, but I’m not holding my breath for another Alfredo. And yea I made a general/appreciation Gibbs thread a few months back, haven’t posted in it in awhile tho. Def deserves a thread for when he drops this
Aug 23, 2021 Greedo and Gibbs have made two 10/10s so far. I wonder how many songs they have banked...I'd be shocked if there weren't any more just because they're both so prolific. I mean Greedo 5+ songs with Lil Pump in one session on his very last night free, he must have at least a couple more with gibbs. When Greedo gets out I need a full tape from them. Don't know why but they just compliment each other so well. I think cuz they can both switch off from straight traditional gangsta rap to more contemporary melodic stuff at the drop of a dime. Both top 10 rappers of the past decade imo.
Aug 23, 2021 Yeah I’ll be honest, I hadn’t really heard or listened to him until Death Row came about. Disco s--- is an obv 10/10. They really do compliment each other so well. Similar to Freddie on a Madlib beat; it just works. Speaking of which, considering this is supposed to have a handful of producers, I gotta imagine there’s a madlib beat or two on this thing.
Aug 23, 2021 Lemme know if you want any recs for Greedo—he's kinda daunting cuz a lot of his mixtapes are so long. But I can recommend some shorter ones or make a playlist if you're interested!
Aug 23, 2021 Still Summer in the Projects and Netflix & Deal are probably the most easily accessible starting points even tho they're not his best (still good to great though!). They're produced by DJ Mustard and Kenny Beats respectively if you like either of them. God Level and Money Changes Everything are his best imo along with First Night Out. GL and MCE are both long but FNO is easily digestible. But the version on streaming is missing the first track cuz of sample stuff I believe and it's an essential:
Aug 23, 2021 The Purple Summer tapes I don't really ever listen to straight through for obvious reasons. They're long for the same reason Gucci/Lil B/etc dropped so many tapes in such a short period—they're made for experimentation and to leave a lot of room to have fun/play around, try new things, and see what works and what doesn't. Def worth going through them though if you like what you hear from other stuff. 2017/Purple Summer 3 is really when he starts to figure out what works for him imo.
