Jun 17, 2015 History has vindicated it, but initially there was a bit of a backlash from staunch Kendrick fans who saw it as a departure from traditional hiphop into radio play. The song had very meaningful lyrics, took on an innovative experimental-funk sound and casual listeners happened to like it too. I just think hiphop tends to have this sort of macho attitude to it. Kind of like how Eminem's LTWYL is a meaningful song, but because Rihanna is on it, it gets extra hate. Apparently, Kendrick's best fans think he's a p---- because he's on Ellen. Gro wup.

Jun 17, 2015 I always liked I. I always had faith it would make more sense on the album than it did as a single. I think he explained himself pretty well in interviews before the albums release. He wanted to put out some positive vibes. Nothing wrong with that.
