Sep 17, 2020 Kanye snaked Dame by signing with Jay in the first place, Jay snaked Kanye in return. Neither one of them got any loyalty.
Sep 17, 2020 What's this "masters" thing? From what I gathered from Kanye's twitter rant is that he doesn't own the rights to his music.. Could someone explain what all of this means?
Sep 17, 2020 He doesn't make money of his old music and he doesn't own rights to it. So for example he can't decide in the future that he wants to release unreleased stuff himself.
Sep 17, 2020 Yeah I'm not sure I understand the whole "master" thing either. But I do understand how this is BIG news.
Sep 17, 2020 Basically, it’s owning your own music. An idea put in motion for labels to profit off artists way after their deaths and initial successes capitalizing on their timeless music.
Sep 17, 2020 Majority of artist do not own their masters. The master recording. Its something that happens when you sign a record deal, you may get a percentage of record sales, and royalties, but its a very small fraction compared to what the label gets. When youre at these artist level you deal with things like "publishing (basically how song writers (writers include lyrics, producers, musicians, samples, sometimes even engineers) get paid. You deal with distribution (if you notice Em's last album he paid for most things, thats why he had production from dre, himself, porter, alchemist, royce etc) he just used interscope as the distributor. In most cases the label gives an artist a budget, handles promo, and distribution. But the artist makes a small amount from sales. the budget has to pay for samples (samples sometimes can take up to 70 percent of the songs royalties) producers, mixing/Mastering (at that level also, mixing alone can rack up 5k an hour) and by not owning their masters they dont get the full amount that they put into the work. back during Cd sales big artist would be lucky to get 1 dollar per album sale. But by not owning the masters they also cant choose what music is used for or how its used in alot of cases. Thats why ppl are preaching ownership and staying independent, finding ways to promote yourself, build your own content and get people invested in your music. Ppl mock russ but thats why he gets so godamn much from royalties bc he doesnt have to pay engineers, producers, or anyone to make his music unless its something he wants to do. Its the reason why alot of artist arent as rich as people think and why artist have to tour until they die bc the labels get the majority of revenue generated from the artists catalogue. Also a new thing is labels telling artist that they will "give them the masters to an album for every new album they turn out" so it would be like Kanye making a new album in turn for college drop out. then another album for late registration etc. so basically "hey give us a new album to make a f--- load of money from and we will give you the old album that doesnt generate much anymore"
Sep 17, 2020 Also the 360 deals ppl talk about means labels get a cut of everything. Used to be they got money from the albums, now with 360 deals they get a cut of tours, merch, and any 3rd party deal the artist signs. like if Kanye was in a 360 deal (which hes not) they would get a cut of everything he does with adidas
Sep 17, 2020 How is this surprising. The guy isn't a business man. He's a business, man. Just handling his business, d---
Sep 17, 2020 Eminem made a new deal with Interscope after his contract expired with Kamikaze. I always thought he just resigned with them, but it looks like he made a new deal. He owns the masters now, at least from the music post Kamikaze.
Sep 17, 2020 Wow, jigga is quite the snake...hope Kanye disses him back.... no friends in this game...really sly move..l
Sep 17, 2020 Good. Usually a Kanye fan, but I'm sick of him lately. First with him suggesting 'taking down' of Michael Jackson, Bill Cosby and R.Kelly was some racial conspiracy... I mean... what a f---ing d-ck head. Second, with his pissing on Grammy's and non-stop narcissistic rants. It's all about him. It's all about his ego. He's a petulant c---- and from the sounds of it - from his ex-staff and those around him... an absolute a------ of a human being.
