Jun 22, 2015 Don't remember a thread like this before. To me, this is pretty difficult (moreso than directors with more varied filmographies like Scorsese or Spielberg)... kind of like ranking Outkast albums, where the quality is so close together. Hard Eight (also known as Sydney) Boogie Nights Magnolia Punch-Drunk Love There Will Be Blood The Master Inherent Vice I'd have to say: 1. There Will Be Blood 2. Boogie Nights 3. Magnolia 4. The Master 5. Punch-Drunk Love 6. Inherent Vice 7. Hard Eight Honestly, 2-4 are very interchangeable. And I have much love for what PDL is... personally, if I was being truthful, I might say PDL and Magnolia are my actual favorites. (Shelley Duvall, Aimee Mann s/ts ftw) Anyway, how about you? Anyone wish this pretentious f--- would stop calling himself PT?
Jun 22, 2015 havent seen magnolia, boogie nights, or hard eight 1. there will be blood 2. the master 3. punch drunk love 4. inherent vice goat director and i havent seen two of his best projects yet
Jun 22, 2015 honestly, my PERSONAL picks would be: 1. PDL 2. Magnolia 3. The Master (find the character work, and the time period, to be more compelling than TWB
Jun 22, 2015 I agree that this is pretty tough, but... 1. There Will Be Blood 2. The Master 3. Punch Drunk Love 4. Magnolia 5. Boogie Nights 6. Inherent Vice 7. Hard Eight
Jun 22, 2015 I've only seen Inherent Vice and There Will Be Blood...but I've obviously heard great things about the rest of PTA's films and have a few in my backlog. Should I give them all a go? In release order? @captain awesome @Twan
Jun 22, 2015 I like this list better than mine. It's crazy how slept on The Master is, imo -- must face a backlash compared to the more bombastic TWBB. Anderson didn't even get a screenplay nomination at the Oscars for it..
Jun 22, 2015 1. There Will Be Blood 2. Magnolia 3. The Master 4. Boogie Nights 5. Punch-Drunk Love Haven't seen the other two films.
Jun 22, 2015 Hard Eight is the only one that's a few notches below the rest, but it is still worth a look. I don't think the order necessarily matters to appreciate them, but it would be interesting to watch how his style evolved over time (e.g. Strong Scorsese and Altman influence in the beginning that shifted more towards a Kunrickian level of control later on).
Jun 22, 2015 Lately I've been feeling: 1. The Master 2. Punch-Drunk Love 3. There Will Be Blood 4. Inherent Vice 5. Boogie Nights 6. Magnolia 7. Hard Eight
Jun 22, 2015 1. There Will Be Blood 2. The Master 3. Boogie Nights 4. Punch-Drunk Love ------------------------------- 5. Magnolia 6. Inherent Vice 7. Syndey
Jun 22, 2015 1.) There Will Be Blood 2.) Magnolia 3.) The Master 4.) Boogie Nights 5.) Punch-Drunk Love 6.) Inherent Vice 7.) Hard Eight
Jun 22, 2015 1. Punch Drunk Love 2. Magnolia 3. There will be blood 4. Boogie Nights 5. Inherent vice 6. The Master 7. Hard Eight I feel awkward by putting the master 6th, seems low but his entire work is amazing
Jun 24, 2015 i've only seen these five. in order: There Will Be Blood Boogie Nights Punch Drunk Love The Master Inherent Vice i haven't read IV. i've heard that improves the experience. i'm actually a bigger fan of the master than most people were (or most people were about aspects other than the cinematography). they're all at least very good.
Jun 24, 2015 Pls reserve some time in your day to watch Magnolia. I first watched it when I was first rly coming into my own as a film fan (shout out @CharlieWork and @Narsh) so the unfettered joy of being a teenager devouring a rich cinematic experience --as well as that cast-- might be blinding me slightly
Jun 24, 2015 even though TWBB is securely in my top 5 favorite films, ever, every time I see The Master it makes me question my entire ranking (as well as existence but ya know, thats besides the point) I wouldnt be mad if someone said it was tied with TWBB as PT's best film to date. Would be incredible if he made anything as good as those two again. Even though I love Punch Drunk Love I could never rank it above the The Master like Paul
Jun 24, 2015 Magnolia was the first PTA film I watched and definitely under similar circumstances. I remember thinking it was amazing, but now it's not even in my top 5 PTA films. I wouldn't say any of his films are particularly bad, but Magnolia just feels like a clusterfuck at times. You see a lot of Robert Altman's influence without the personal spin he puts on it in Boogie Nights. Honestly how I felt about Inherent Vice in relation to The Long Goodbye.
Jun 24, 2015 thats the crazy thing about ranking his filmography. i honestly could make a case punch drunk love is one of his most passionate and successful projects -- its got an intimacy and style that stands it apart from the others (boogie nights is a companion to magnolia; twbb is a companion to the master stylistically) @CharlieWork -- idk, i have a soft spot for magnolia's ambition, and its use of aimee mann
