Dec 12, 2014 A solid 16 months after the network announced its collaboration with Community star Donald Glover, FX has ordered a pilot for Atlanta, a new comedy series about the city’s rap scene. According to the official press release: FX Networks has ordered the comedy series pilot Atlanta created by and starring award-winning actor and writer Donald Glover (Community, 30 Rock), it was announced today by Nick Grad and Eric Schrier, the Presidents of Original Programming for FX Networks and FX Productions. Glover serves as Executive Producer, along with Paul Simms (Girls, Flight of the Conchords, NewsRadio), and Dianne McGunigle of Schiff Company. The pilot will be produced by FX Productions. Irony being the wonderful thing that it is, Glover’s character sort of mirrors his own bouncy relationship with Community. You know, that popular(ly canceled) series about community college students? Atlanta revolves around two cousins on their way up through the Atlanta rap scene whose opposing views on art versus commerce, success and race will make their quest anything but easy. Glover will play “Earnest ‘Earn’ Marks,” a college drop-out who reconnects with his long buried ambition and sets out to seize the life he imagined for himself when his estranged cousin becomes a sudden star. Just as the press release started making the rounds, David Itzkoff of the New York Times broke the news on Twitter. http://uproxx.com/tv/2014/12/over-a...ers-atlanta-pilot-episode-from-donald-glover/
Oct 13, 2015 Donald Glover’s pilot for FX,Atlanta, has officially found its leads, the network announced Thursday. The rapper and comedian best known for playing Troy on Community will not only write the show but also star alongside Brian Tyree Henry (The Knick, Boardwalk Empire), Lakeith Lee Stanfield (Short Term 12, Dope) and Zazie Beetz (Applesauce). Glover, who received a Writer’s Guild Award as a writer for 30 Rock, will play Earnest “Earn” Marks. Earn snags the opportunity to manage the career of his rapper cousin, Alfred Miles (Brian Tyree Henry). The two come into conflict over music, money and race. Stanfield will play Darius, Alfred’s collaborator, and Beetz will play the mother of Earn’s child. Hiro Murai, who has directed several of Glover’s music videos (the actor raps under the name Childish Gambino) and worked as a cinematographer on shows such as Drunk History, will direct the pilot. The show begins production this month. http://time.com/3944896/fx-donald-glover-atlanta-cast/

Jan 17, 2016 Article Source: Hollywood Reporter Donald Glover Previews His FX Comedy 'Atlanta': "'Twin Peaks' With Rappers" JANUARY 16, 2016 12:35pm PT by Kate Stanhope Donald Glover is back on TV, but he's a long way from (his former) home. The former Community star created, exec produces and stars in FX's new half-hour comedy Atlanta. The series centers on Earnest "Earn" Marks (Glover) a loner who returns to his hometown of Atlanta to try to make ends meet before being drawn into the rap scene when his cousin suddenly skyrockets to stardom. "I just always wanted to make Twin Peaks with rappers," Glover joked to reporters Saturday at the Television Critics Association winter press tour. Atlanta marks Glover's return to TV following Community, on which he starred for five seasons. In the time in between, Glover headlined a semi-autobiographical comedy for NBC in 2012 that was never picked up and also launched a successful rap career under the name Childish Gambino. Glover said he was courted for other projects in the interim, but "I knew they weren't me," he said. "People wanted to make me everything. I think they still do." Instead, Glover waited to find a way to combine his two artistic passions in Atlanta. "Its kind of the perfect time to make something that I would want to see," he said. Glover pointed specifically to the need in the current era to interact with viewers across multiple platforms like cell phones and computers in addition to TV. "There's more screens that have to be filled," he continued. It's "the perfect time to combine everything that media kind of is right now." The result is a series Glover says is deeply personal to him. Instead of a writer's room, the writers of Atlantaconvene at Glover's house where they eat together and peruse the Internet together. "I've been keeping them very close and tight and secret because I just want to make sure they're perfect," he said when asked about the scripts of the series. "Television shows are like novels. You just got to invest in them. The tone of this, it's going to take people time to figure out what's going on, which I think is a good thing." Atlanta premieres this summer on FX.
Apr 3, 2016 Just saw the previews; I can't wait for the trailer so I can judge whether or not it's going to be amazing. But I like the premise; from the resulting shows about black cousins, The Boondocks was more saterical and Key & Peele is just one episode. I'm thinking this will be more straight up comedy with some satirical bits so it's probably going to be like Silicon Valley. Except for rap heads and ATLiens.
