Kool G is one of very few rappers to excel in two different eras. Polo weighs down his early material, but he only excelled in the 90s. He fathered a style you can see birthing anybody from Nas to Biggie to Raekwon.

Cam'Ron shouldn't be there imo. Lots of people deserve that more. Surprised not to see Guru.

Surprised at the lack of Rakim, where would you rank him?

guru is definitely in the top 20. he was great. but cam has three classics on his own (and a fourth that's close) and one of the greatest double albums ever with dipset. almost no one from any city has merged stylistic innovation with a sense for pop like he could.

Ballsy list, but not bad. I think most automatically expect Rakim, maybe 50, Bid Daddy Kane, Big Pun, LL, names like those on a list like this. Personally I'd prefer seeing Chuck D in there somewhere, but it's not my list.

Mine might have Chuck, DMX, Sticky, LL, maybe. Gotta be a tough thought process, personal or not.

i didn't forget him. new york has, by volume, the most great rappers ever--the dude with one second-tier classic isn't cutting it. he was brilliant, but can't crack this list.

sad but true, the music the East Coast is making now puts me to shame. got me listening to the older stuff instead.

I know Purple Haze & Come Home With Me are essentials but which one would be the 3rd classic? S.D.E?

I'd rearrange some of this list around mostly from personal preference and maybe add Big Pun & Fifty but the list is great. Deep down I want to find a spot for Puff & Ma$e somewhere lol.

    parentheses because jersey

dunno how you could slide 50 on there, honestly. one great album (two if you count power of the dollar and ignore a quarter of it) and a lot of fat. trust me, i wish i could justify puff and mase on there.

yes, third cam classic is SDE. confessions of fire is the one that's close. crime pays has one of his best songs, but neither it nor killa season is essential.

this is a tough sell to me. over ghostface?
