Starting to make some beats and i'd love to hear some tips and common mistakes. Do you guys know any free sound kits that you prefer or might be helpful?

Whatever genre you're producing, listen to your favorites in it very carefully. Listen to how they structure things, how things flow together, the instruments they use, the synths, the samples etc.

Then think to yourself: how do they do that? Never stop trying to figure it out and you'll always keep getting better. Don't strive to sound just like them though, figure your own thing out and keep on trying to make it work. Remember to put in different variations to parts of your songs on the drums and melodies etc. also chop stuff up and (if you're using FL) take advantage of the 'Make Unique' thing on patterns to help with putting variations on things.

As for kits, go cop you some Vengeance Essentials Trap Kits or something, it's got plenty of sounds and it's easy to find through certain sites. Also grab Nexus for synths and stuff like piano. Orchestral is a great plugin for strings and other orchestral stuff.

And if you are in FL, there's a number of little tricks I can tell you past all this.

If you're doing original stuff, there's also the Detect Score Scale option in piano roll, as well as Ghost Channels so you can see notes from other channels on the same pattern to keep it all in the same key

Another thing I try and do is to do something different each time I produce a track. Like say the last song I worked on I built the Builds a certain way for the drop, I'll try and do it different this time and incorporate different sounding things into it when I can, so stuff doesn't get stale. I also try and add variation to the drums each go round so it changes, even if just slightly, from section to section, as well as bringing in parts of it at a time or taking out parts of it at times.
