I listened to Jay's 4:44 and decided that I was tired of this oppressive rent s--- and it was time to invest in real estate.

It's a new build expected to be done ~February (but with COVID and the hurricanes, who knows) so if anybody has any advice on those it'd be appreciated

Yea aren't they having hurricanes/tropical storms down near TX or something? (I'm just relaying what the builders were rattling off, lol. Apparently supply availability is pretty volatile right now)

And yea my girlfriend and I started renting in Utah about a year ago, but we're dishing out $1,445 a month for that.

We ended up getting a house down in Arizona because it's actually affordable. Utah has literal trailers going for $300k+. Looking forward to actually having liquor and scratch-offs in gas stations again.

Congrats man! You living in a gated community in scottsdale? :emoji_sunglasses: Not a fan of the phoenix area myself but I f--- with Flagstaff as far as Arizona goes. I have friends and cousins that live in phoenix and love it though.

I went to my (a different) cousin's wedding (mormon) in Salt Lake City a few years ago and my other (non-arizona, non-mormon) cousin and I went out to a bar for a drink, I was like "can I have a double whiskey and coke please" and they were like "no you can't this is Utah where are you from" lol. 3.2% beers and you can't order a double.

we are co-owning and, if you're not recommending due to potential separation complications, I totally get it but we feel pretty confident in ourselves at the moment (as would any couple, I'd imagine, lol). It's a risk that we've definitely acknowledged and discussed.

If it's for other reasons I'd like to hear them? Sorry for assuming but that's the one that we've got from some friends and coworkers.

And yea, we're hyped. Going from a $1,445 rent payment to a ~$1,200 mortgage for a larger space/garage/yard. Only thing that sucks is that it's ~7 hours away so we won't be super present for the construction process which I hear can be less than ideal.

yeah its just .....very dicey legally in case u guys split up. like the system is designed to make it much easier for married cpls to own property, or cease owning property. why not just get married? just kind of leaning into the punch a bit

yeah just schedule out a few periodic trips just in case. keep em on task. what do u do for a living btw i forget
my buddy is building a house i wanna say in phoenix or scottsdale. near u?

h--- no, lmao, we were able to afford a place in Coolidge (~45 minutes south of Phoenix)...the town itself blows now but I hear they're adding a lot to it and, if Phoenix continues to overflow like it has been, it's only a matter of time before this expands.

If it doesn't expand, at least it's close enough to Phoenix/Tucson but far enough away to avoid the traffic.

And yea Utah is weird when it comes to that. Most "bar" restaurants require that you order food if you get a drink. We only have like three "beer-only" bars here in Saint George that don't require food.

    1. We've also discussed marriage and we're very open to the idea...but mutually neither of us is in a rush. I'm sure it'll happen sooner than we think, lol. We've already moved across the country away from our friends and families, so the committed aspect is very present, we'd just have to seal the deal. I'm curious to see how the process goes as far as changing property titles, etc. when we get married after already co-owning as separate.

    2. We both work remotely for a software company based out of Wisconsin.

    3. Nah, I wish we could afford something near Scottsdale. We're in Coolidge (don't look into it, it's trash but the property/homes are relatively cheap at the moment, lol) Hopefully values continue to go up in the future like they did with San Tan Valley, Florence, Gilbert, Chandler, etc.

    4. Nah again, we only did 5% down #MortgageInsurance. It sucks but it's what we can afford. Our Wisconsin Company doesn't pay cost-of-living adjustments, so we're still making Central WI wages down here :emoji_slight_frown: The good news is that the job market is a lot better in AZ than south-west Utah, so if we were to change I think it'd be a little easier.

hah thats why i was asking. i was like fuckkkkkk thattttt

tell me about it............. maybe things will change as companies shift to more remote

haha this is very diplomatically stated. i would be curious if u guys are leaving money on the table entering home ownership, or potentially having to adjust the title in the future, as co habitors rn..

owning a home is amazing. If you can afford paying rent, you can afford a home. imagine your rent money going into something that you can actually sell. EQUITY!

EDIT: I own land and 2 properties at the moment. 1 is being rented out.

I'll be sure to keep the forum updated on any and all of this throughout the process, lol.

I'm curious to see how the inevitable shift to remote culture* will impact salaries across the board, tbh.

*I say this like it hasn't already been around for years, lol. Our software company is a dinosaur and only allowed people to have 12 work-from-home days before COVID hit. Now everybody is currently remote and performance is up across the board, lol.

Imagine living in the middle of Nebraska but working for a California-based company making California wages (assuming the company standardizes pay based on position and not location, or at least weighs location less).
