So I presume it's because of his sex crimes which begs the question, why review Kodak Black? They panned both his and ---'s album while citing the charges against them. Is it okay to call Dre's The Chronic trash and cite him slapping Dee Barnes as something that taints the project? Do you think this moralizing and editorializing is necessary to good criticism? It doesn't look like they intend on ever separating the quality of the music from the quality of the person any time soon. Though I'm guessing we'll see plenty of hypocritical omissions for certain artists in time.

Pitchfork reviews plenty of more niche acts. To the publication's credit, they did mention the charges against Kodak and pan his album. Same with ---.

The review they published of Action Bronson's Saab Stories I believe it was is always a handy example I refer to. It rails on about his sexist lyrics despite him playing at an over-the-top exploitation character by his very name. It looks like now they at least want real charges to complain about, rightfully so.

I would assume it’d be due to the quality of the music itself. Kodak and ---’s projects had great production while both are seen as amazing, yet polarizing, artists.

Tekashi doesn’t have this kind of reputation yet, he’s seen as a gimmicky screamo rapper who, along with the underage legal case, wouldn’t be someone that Pitchfork would actually care about compared to someone like Kodak or ---

Pitchfork covered his sex crimes, just not his album. He's had multiple top 40 songs. He's on their radar lol.

yeah but he's not someone they'd care about music wise. He's a gimmicky soundcloud rapper, who engaged in underaged sexual contact, but his music itself isn't something they care about itself. They don't take the time to review albums & projects that either aren't huge in the indie/underground scene, the artist theirself is huge or the project is new, experimental and innovating.

With Tekashi they don't care about his mixtape because of the quality itself, there's nothing new about it, there's no new ground being broken by an artist expected by him plus the mixtape as a whole is just him virtually screaming with no variety or diverse production, which wouldn't be worth their time. Plus only 2 major big outlets actually reviewed Day69, HotNewHipHop & Salute Magazine, so there could be an industry backlash towards Tekashi for the underage sex accusations and refusing to review his music.

p/much bringing up how crimes or irl stuff that affect an artist shouldn't affect someone's artistic work

but he sold 60k and has THREE charting hits, soon to be a fourth with billy so you literally cannot call him a soundcloud rapper lmao

production is very unique and diverse also, if anything you gotta at least cite that as a strongpoint

Well yeah he's not a soundcloud rapper but to the general public he's seen as one due to his colorful personality & blowing up on the internet. Production def ain't unique tho, it's just street bangers that rely on trap 808's and there isn't any diversity on the 'tape. Billy, Gummo, Kooda, Keke & Rondo all sound similar, only song that didn't sound similar to the album was Chocolate. Mooky, Doowee & Buba had a different atmosphere but they had similar sound structure with each other compared to the rest of the album.

I just call these guys Gen Z now, but like with mumble rap, I think you can use those descriptors without malicious intent. He's always on the Soundcloud chart. He falls in line with the image those viral rappers have shaped. There's cogency there.

I can say Future and Young Thug "mumble" without saying they're stupid or something. They are definitely more concerned with inflection and delivery being stylized and experimented with than being clear and discernible.

Kind of a tangent, but as somebody who used/uses "Soundcloud" and "mumble", I think it's defensible to a degree.
