Aug 21, 2018 From what I read they aren't just 'cruising around trying to figure out what to do' as you said, they're trying to burn fuel since the plane had like 3,700 gallons of fuel and they're trying to get that way lower to make it safer for an emergency crash landing.

Aug 21, 2018 it’s much harder to land a heavier plane, not because the fuel might explode. It’s perfectly calculated fuel for the distance it’s supposed to go to be light enough to land, they have to burn it to land at the right weight
