Apr 29, 2016 So this question is for the users who think most of the rappers right now are all trash and only talk about "drugs, money, and women", think everything on the radio is awful, etc. What is wrong with artists bragging about what they have or having a song with no clear topic? Why is it a bad thing when, for example, 2 Chainz or Thug do it but when 2Pac, Biggie, Nas, Jay Z, etc. did/do it, it was fine? Also, why do you place so much importance into record sales? From what I read, Illmatic didn't do great numbers when it initially dropped. Does that mean the album is s---? I really don't get it.
Apr 29, 2016 "What is wrong with artists bragging about what they have or having a song with no clear topic?" thats not a problem...the problem with artists like 2 chainz is that the music is trash
Apr 29, 2016 "Reel rap" The stuff thats popular here isn't my kind of music I like the beats and production a lot most of the time but that's about it It has no redeeming features what so ever other than that and I wouldn't consider myself a fan of "reel rap" either
Apr 29, 2016 I'm pretty sure ages ago some1 posted here an archive of sorts of like rlly old hip hop forums from like 2000. Illmatic was copping hate left right and center. was probably 50/50 mix of people saying its good and people saying it was complete trash. just a fun fact. This type of s--- f---ing infuriates me. "can't even understand what he's saying" your not meant to, you f---ing drop kick. Hip hop has always had an underlying influence of heavy slang and using words that only people from similar environments would understand. Imagine if all these 80's/90's rappers didn't use slang and just rapped "in the grimey streets of new york city, I commited crimes and illegally sold class 1 illicit substances - arrest me plz" it's fucken s---. They say words/slang/accents they use. majority of the time saying "I don't understand this hip-hop song or what he's saying" is literally the equivalent of saying "I never struggled in my life, therefore never had the opportunity to hear any of this slang or understand it". It's why all these super serious "intelligent" listeners think they know more about rap and "cant understand anything future or thug says" It's literally because they are sheltered f---ing fa----s. Like we've all seen the uproar/shitstorm that was caused by thug saying "i put that crack in my crack" when in reality ANYONE who has seen or vaguely experienced this kind of lifestyle knows that stuffing drugs next to your nuts/d-ck/a------ is completely f---ing normal as police would very rarely search people there.
Apr 30, 2016 Good question and i guess its just all to do with personal taste. To me, popular hiphop music in todays world just doesn't seem to be a skill any more, it seems lazy and repetative. I have no problem with the subject matter though. The beats themselves rarely appeal to me as well and considering hiphop started with 2 turntables and a microphone, i'd say this is pretty important part of the music!
Apr 30, 2016 Dumbest thing is, if you actually listen to Gates his music has more than what some people might think
May 1, 2016 It's not what the rappers are saying now it's how they say it compared to back then, it sounds dumbed down.
May 1, 2016 its not the slang, slang is always going to change.... lit, finesse, turnt, bando, etc etc aren't what makes lots of new rap from the South hard to listen to. Its the way they act like they don't want to move their jaws or lips to fully pronounce words "I be uh da blah wih ma hitta, (wow) stack ban uh tuh duh cillin, call me Jor forman Im grillin (skrr)" the accent is as heavy as dancehall records..nothing wrong with it but its almost a different genre of music than Rakim or Nas now
May 1, 2016 I kinda agree with this, but, those slurs in their voice do loosely fall into that slang category because it's drug induced (mainly from lean) and the 'lean'd out flow' became so popular that people now put it on.

Why is it a bad thing when, for example, 2 Chainz or Thug do it but when 2Pac, Biggie, Nas, Jay Z, etc. did/do it, it was fine?" The thing is, that 2Chainz, Young Thug, etc. only seem to really make songs about like that. Now, I know that 2Pac and Nas made those kinds of songs, but here's the thing: they made MORE than just that. For every "I Get Around" by 2Pac, we got a "Dear Mama" or "Life Goes On" type song. I'm not asking for Thug or 2Chainz to drop a speech on what's wrong with society and why we need to change, but they are so repetitive with that party music, with just nothing else. "Also, why do you place so much importance into record sales? From what I read, Illmatic didn't do great numbers when it initially dropped. Does that mean the album is s---?" Personally I have never cared about album sales. Immortal Technique said it best, "Universal truth is not measured by mass appeal". He's right. I don't care that an album sold a lot of records and made a lot of money. It's not a big deal to me, honestly.
