Mar 17, 2016 Slight increase might be okay, but 15 an hour for entry level s--- is just outta pocket.
Mar 17, 2016 I don't think it really matters tbh, other wages and prices will just go up based off whatever the minimum wage is. So minimum wage will always be valued at about what it is now. In Oregon where I work, they already have some plan to get it up to $15 by 2020 or 2022 or something.
Mar 17, 2016 So how does the U.S.minimum wage work exactly? I thought waiters, waitresses, bar staff and bus boys etc only earned about $3 per hour?
Mar 17, 2016 Yeah it's different for tipped employees. The American federal government requires a wage of at least $2.13 per hour be paid to employees that receive at least $30 per month in tips. If wages and tips do not equal the federal minimum wage of $7.25 per hour during any pay period, the employer is required to increase cash wages to compensate. So basically they're required to at least make minimum wage still if not the employer has to pay the difference, but as long as the restaurant/bar you work at is at least fairly busy it shouldn't be hard to make that. Many make a lot more in tips than minimum wage employees actually. I was a bartender for a bit and it was definitely nice taking money home every night.
Mar 17, 2016 Not by much though. If the minimum wage were to be increased to say 10.10 over a period of time, food products & other necessities you would see in a super market would maybe go up a dozen cents. There's still a clear benefit for the worker there. It's not like the increase in minimum wage can be written off by prices going up. Elizabeth Warren said this best: @2:30
Mar 17, 2016 Just wow though. Practises like that are actually consisted illegal in the UK. A lot of companies have been fined millions for making minimum wage up with tips. Minimum wage here in the UK is based on age (unfair imo); under 18's earn approx £4 ($6.5) per hour, 18-21's approx £5.50 ($8), over 21's £6.70 ($10) and over 25's (from April) get £7.20 ($11). That is irrespective of tip earning potential. Table service here tends to generate approx 10-15% tip whereas bar staff earn basically 0%, they get a few pennies and drinks bought for them. Still amazes me how 2 of the most developed countries in the world have 2 completely different rules and views in one of the largest job sectors.
Mar 17, 2016 If they increase the minimum wage by that much companies will have to increase everyone else too. It would be pretty s-----y for people who worked hard to make that salary or for other people who earn slightly more to see the minimum wage almost equal what took them years to make. But like others have said above, the prices of everything else is likely to rise too so it might not make much difference.
Mar 17, 2016 We'll get the minimum wage up to £8.25 soon hopefully, thats the living wage here atm and more and more companies are paying it
Mar 18, 2016 Step 1: Increase Minimum Wage to $15/hour Step 2: Buy milk for $6 I'm going to go with no thanks
Mar 18, 2016 The more we increase minimum wage the more everything will become more expensive because of this thing called greed
