Stephen Hawking has died at the age of 76, his family has said.

The British theoretical physicist was known for his groundbreaking work with black holes and relativity, and was the author of several popular science books including A Brief History of Time.

His children, Lucy, Robert and Tim, said: "We are deeply saddened that our beloved father passed away today.

"He was a great scientist and an extraordinary man whose work and legacy will live on for many years."

This guy is responsible for so much of our understanding of the universe. One of the biggest contributors to the knowledge of the human race, and I'm sure he'll be looked upon as the forefather of advanced civilization by our star dwelling descendants, years from now.

He will eventually be regarded as the most important human of all time. Few people understand all of the work he truely did, sadly.

d--- this makes me really sad. hawking overcame so much despite his physical/mental disabilities...will forever be remembered as not only a proper genius, but a huge inspiration to anyone struggling with their own battles.

Other than his black hole discoveries which originally got him noticed hawking doesn’t really have other discoveries that he ever proved. He was also proven wrong multiple times and never believed the Higgs boson would be proven.

I think slyk said it best. A genius but mainly a huge inspiration to others with disabilities. Definitely someone for young people to look up to.

Also ik most people here are atheist but Hawking said before “the thought of afterlife was for people who are afraid of the dark/death.” I’m curious if his mind was the same seconds before passing on and if there is a god, that Hawking finally gets to find out the true creation of the universe which was a goal of his. I used to question God but the older I get and the more I learned on the universe makes me think there almost has to be a “creator” or some math magician that somehow structured the universe. Everything is almost too perfect for there to be a random b--- and for the universe not to collapse right away after it. There’s somehow a perfect amount of material to keep this universe stable. It just seems too lucky for a random universe to remain stable.

You throw this in like a side note but this totally revolutionized the way scientists think about black holes & gravity. His discovery was remarkable.
