Lets talk about Yung Lean. [IMG]

Dude is from Sweden, and raps over the trippiest "cloud trap" beats I've ever heard. Him and his team have some serious talent. They make some bangers. He has a cult following with the whole Sad Boys thing. He used to be like a Lil B type "nonsensical" rapper but with Unknown Memory he has stepped up his game and is taking music seriously and it sound pretty d--- good to me. He def has a different sound.

    Thoughts on Lean?

He released an album titled Unknown Memory (2014) and I think its some of his best work yet.

    Some highlights:

One of his more well known songs

Interview with Yung Lean and Yung Sherman at around 6:25 Lean talks about how people either hate or love his music

Lmao expect a lot of hate incoming

Yung Lean is f---ing dope. He's similar to Drake or Rich Homie Quan in that he can't necessarily sing well from a technical perspective, but it still sounds good.

I like how unique this guy is, like he sings over, as OP said, some of the trippiest cloud trap beats this side of Lil B, and his voice blends so well with the production. Him and his whole crew are from Sweden, so I would've imagined they'd only heard the typical s--- when it comes to rap: DJ Mustard beats, oversimplified rhyme schemes, and big name RnB features. But it's clear that they actually did their research because they have their own little niche going. Also, I think it's cool that the way they're breaking into the American scene is through Travi$ Scott and Metro Boomin.

I don't really like much of his older stuff because he was kind of one of those ironic, silly white artists who you could tell intentionally came off a bit corny so that he could fall back on that as an excuse for criticisms of him. But he's shown a lot of evolution from both a musical and characteristic viewpoint, and I'm excited to see where he goes from here.

The guys is really polarizing. Either you like his music or you think it sucks. He talks about it in an interview I'll put up in the original post.

Totally agree man. I love his sound and how unique he is. His older stuff is meh, outside of a few bangers like Oreo Milkshake, Ginsingstrip, Motorola, and Hurt. But Unknown Memory is so f---ing good. Like you said Yung Lean is f---ing dope and Yung Sherman is too.

Edit: Like you mentioned I love how he blends his flow and autotune into the song. It's like they are one. Its f---ing sweet. I just hope they keep making trippy songs together like in Unknown Memory

Called it. Houston, the haters have landed.

I know this was meant in jest, but the term CAC is misused so much on this site

Like cac means cracker a--- cracker. If you're a cracker a--- cracker, that means you're the kinda guy who listens to Phil Collins and the only rapper you like is Eminem. Not the kinda guys who like progressive cloud rappers from Sweden lol

he's alright, let's not get ahead of ourselves here.

I get the comparison but it's really not appropraite at all.

Lean's vocals are way more manipulated than Drake's or Quan's. The latter 2 can actually sing to a degree/you're understating their ability to sing.

Lean's vocals are like Kanye's on "Only One," in that they are often manipulated to a degree that you either enjoy how it sounds, or are put off.

Despite the fantastic production, Lean is so d--- boring to me. He's writing is laughable half the time (even if it's purposefully like that), and his drawn out and monotone shtick makes it stand out that much more. You hide s--- lyrics by delivering them faster (see: eminem (or young thug)), not drawing them out and making them take center stage.

I know the atmosphere, the aesthetic, etc is the whole point of his music - but he just doesn't interest me enough to want to stick around for that aspect of his music. I'd rather listen to a tape of his instrumentals lol

But like I said, I can see why people like him - but I'm not really into it. Too slow for me I guess.

I am a sad boy at heart tho
    meh :kanye3:

    also @csw621 u dumb brah

Obviously what he lacks is lyrics. I like that they blend in so well with the beat. s--- is trippy. However I don't think his lyrics are that bad. Actually listen to them, he has a message. His music is def an acquired taste. s--- sounds other worldly tho.

I'll give this a chance :drake3:, heard he was wack but if my friends say it sucks it probably means it's worth a listen. I enjoyed some of Travis Scott last year and as an A$AP stan I'm sure the production will probably sound dope to me.

I understand that he's not as good a singer as the guys I mentioned but I was just drawing a comparison y'know.

And idk man I understand his lyrics aren't great but as has been stated its just the otherworldliness of his music.

I truly think he's f---ing dope, and I assume that most people that dislike him are like the Young Thug haters and just aren't used to a different kind of singing and production
