Feb 17, 2021 I was just listening to "Yah Yah", Great track obviously - but thinking how it has Royce and Black Thought on it, two pure rap guys Em never would normally have on his mainstream album... Then it reminds me of an interview with Masta Ace where he said something like Paul said ''it ain't gonna happen'' @ collaborating with Em, when he was huge; aka implying Em didn't collaborate with underground or lesser known rappers when he's a megastar... Feels like he only is collabing with guys like this now as he's on a mainstream decline, similar to how he spelled out on the D12 track on Kamikaze. Pretty s-----y.
Feb 18, 2021 I dont get why Em says he used them as stepping stones. SSLP and MMLP had already dropped by the time he put them on. He was already peak status.
Feb 18, 2021 Em is a d---ed weirdo and he has a very specific way of doing things and according to Budden, it’s based on analytics that his people come up with. There are so many collaborations that Em could have and should have done the past twenty something years but he just winds up doing songs with big name Pop artists or random artists no one really cares for. He might even be intimidated by certain rappers lyrically speaking or beat wise. How the f--- you have Alchemist by your side for years and you just primarily use him as a DJ? What kind of goofy s--- is that? Signs Griselda and pretty much does nothing for them. He had Gunn in the middle of the crowd recording him while he’s onstage. It’s almost as if Em is autistic or something.
Feb 18, 2021 He’s as autistic as they come, big fella. The bass brothers said once in an interview that they had to tell him how to approach beats, I.e this one is a sad beat, so write a sad song, this one is an angry beat so rap angrily GRRRR GRRR... Eminem is autistic as f---.
Feb 18, 2021 I feel like the Bass Brothers played a huge role in the greatness of Eminem and his classic songs. Ever since they left his music hasn’t been nearly as good.
Feb 18, 2021 Listening to these replies are hilarious! When will you all realise that young Em was all about making the best songs possible with the best beats. Early Em didn’t care about sales it was all about dissing and making amazing music. Em of today is all about sales and that’s why he uses pop stars for hooks to help his albums sell more. That’s the thing that pisses me off so much, he the biggest selling rapper of all time and nothing will ever change that so god knows why he still cares about sales. Budden said it best that Em needs to stop focusing on sales and make better quality music. The fact he hasn’t done any tracks with Hospin yet us criminal. Em is surrounded by too many yes men and that’s why they allow him to release such crap music instead of telling him the truth that it’s dog s--- and make him change it. Em should have got rid of Rosenberg years ago. Give me Em tracks like Scary Movie with Royce that s--- is classic Em full of venom not the pop artist loser he turned in to today!
Feb 18, 2021 But I do not agree totally with the OP. Em collabed with many big and good MCs back then, m--- and Red, Sticky Fingaz, Jay Z, Xzibit, Cypress Hill, produced for Nas, and dont forget about the 8 Mile OST line up, which was amazing with people like Rakim. However it is true that some collabs are odd that they never happened..
Feb 18, 2021 The Nas thing goes both ways tho... he got an Eminem beat for God’s Son, but it doesn’t sound like he asked him for a verse at the time. Which there would’ve been a lot of pressure on Nas after the “Eminem murdered you on your own s---” line on Ether. Edit: forgot Nas asked Em to hop on a remix of Daughters and he declined.
Feb 18, 2021 I kinda agree with OP. It never really made sense to me why Em, as a competitive/lyrical rapper, rarely or never worked with people like Nas, Jay-Z, Kendrick, Cole, Pharoahe Monch, Crooked I, Tech N9ne, Joey Badass, etc. The disappointment of Revival was also huge because in the months leading up to the releaae, he kept shouting out the legends and wearing t-shirts with Illmatic, The Chronic, Doggystyle, etc. Then the photos came with 2Chainz. Then the tracklist came and BAM we got Pink, Beyonce, Skylar Grey, and Ed Sheeran.
Feb 18, 2021 Before Bass Brothers groomed him, he didn’t know how to make music. He was doing the exact same s--- he is now, gotta rap fast! Look at his ‘95 & previous music, this is 1 of his best cuts from that era but still shows the contrast between what he was creating then to what he was creating with the Bass Bros 2 years later:
Feb 18, 2021 Em has been nothing but loyal to Royce so I disagree with that part. That said, I do think Interscope tried hard to milk or market Eminem as a "pop star", hence all the pop collabs from the 2010-2017 era after Relapse failed to live up to commercial expectations. I do think it's strange that Eminem hasn't collabed with Elzhi or Black Milk before, two very talented Detroit artists who've done a lot for hip hop. I also think Eminem not doing a project with Madlib, Alchemist, etc. was a missed opportunity. Rapping over jazzy or boom bap sounding beats different from the Dre, pop, or trap sound will highlight his versatility as a rapper imho.
Feb 18, 2021 I'm still confused as f--- about Phresher. Literally, this is how I think it happened. Eminem as Erlich, and kid as a Phresher:
