Why have Mixtapes basically turned into free albums now?

    With Mixtapes like Acid Rap, Overly Dedicated, Kush & OJ, MMM & Owl Pharoah, it feels like the 50 cent kind of mixtapes are fading and the more polished mixtapes are becoming the new norm.

    I think it's a safe zone for artists to experiment. If it turns out to be trash they can say it's just a mixtape bro.

    rappers don't make s--- off sales anymore, so they put their material out for free to make it more accessible. then they cash in on shows and endorsements instead as an actual source of income.

    I'm really thinking I should release everything for free. Makes sense imo since these mixtapes are basically albums with polish and production.

    an extremely oversaturated market where you literally have to push music in peoples face to make them listen to it

    thats how

    also the reason why ppl did label contracts was because of distribution as well as the money, but who needs a label to distribute when u can just post it online
