Mar 26, 2015 i was never a fan of wanting to live in an apartment but it seems that's where i'm headed any tips, advice, things you wish you knew before moving? gonna be a 2 bedroom with 1 roommate
Mar 26, 2015 - Try to get one with a washer/dryer. Lugging your laundry to the other side of the complex every few days is a b---- - Read lots of reviews online, make sure there's no past of bed bugs or murders or car theft These are from personal experience
Mar 26, 2015 I'm in my first apartment by myself after renting houses with roommates for years. I can't really imagine living in a small space with a roommate....but in general I like it. It's all about your neighbors. I'm on the first floor and my upstairs neighbors are on the same sleep schedule as me so my sleep is fine and they never bother me but I do hear when they have sex but it sounds quick and unfulfilling so it doesn't bother me for too long. I learned that it's hot as balls in apartments even in the winter and you don't need to use heat that much but in turn in the summer you have the AC on a lot more.
Mar 26, 2015 - If utilities are not included, make sure to ask what they usually run. - Get one near your university or near a bus line to it. Commuting gets old fast. - Ask how thin the walls are. Loud people s---. Traffic as well. - If you smoke, get a roommate who smokes. If he deals, have fun being paranoid. - Make it clear what's yours and what you guys can share. Food, toilet paper, etc. - If they have a girlfriend, you will either never see them or consistently be a third wheel. - Don't sign a lease that runs August to August or something stupid like that. It basically traps you from moving in the future without your rent overlapping. Shady places do that.
Mar 26, 2015 Where do you live that leases don't work like that? Every rental in my area is year/6 months/ month by month. Rent unfortunately has to overlap if you want to move out that's how they get you to stay by making it inconvenient.
Mar 26, 2015 I had a roommate once who was my weed dealer. Was all good that I didn't have to go anywhere to get weed until the house was raided by the police
Mar 26, 2015 Mine was a dealer. He'd always be like "hey so-and-so are coming by, could you weigh it up and bag it". Dude wanted me to do his dirty work while he's across town. Not to mention the when some f--- heads would swing by and beat the door down while everybody's still sleeping. Lucky he never handled enough weight to attract much attention. Cop lived two apartments below us lol.
Mar 26, 2015 My friend had a jeep Cherokee on 22's with TV's in the headrests and an outrageous sound system. All ways trying to be the neighborhood super star. Do he drew a ton of attention to our house
Mar 27, 2015 the place we are looking at has 3 stories and we both smoke weed so i figure top floor would be best right? not sure how easy it is to smell through the walls.. don't wanna bother neighbors or have them talkin s--- to management i'm personally cool with smoking in the bathroom and sending it up the vents so it don't stink so bad but i'm sure that will get old fast lease is 6 month , room mate is probably more organized than i am though we won't even be seeing each other much because of work schedules i like the look up reviews tip about bed bugs n s---.. gonna check that out .. other than that i can't think of much
Mar 27, 2015 I had a room mate when I was 18 who asked me to do s--- like that. I'd take his s--- all the time. Shrooms, weed, pills etc. Guy was an idiot. Anyone asking you to do puppet work deserves such.
Mar 27, 2015 Well mine was a friend since childhood. We were in the same kindergarten class. Just put unneeded strain on the friendship. I had stopped smoking by then otherwise he would have been handy to get smoked up with for free all the time. If your closet is big enough, get some lights and make it the smoke spot. Works the best if you don't mind your clothes smelling like buds. @Final
Mar 27, 2015 Read up on your rights as a tenant. If something needs fixed, request it in writing and keep a copy for your records. If they try to kick you out for wanting them to fix something, sue the f--- out of them. Read your lease carefully. When its time to get your deposit back, they must send an itemized list of what they deducted within 30 days, or you can take them to court for 3 times the amount of the deposit. Wish I knew all this back when I lived in an apartment.
Mar 27, 2015 Check your cell reception all around the apartment. I heard living close to a hospital for power outage helps your place restore power faster. Keep in mind the utilities when choosing a floor. Like mentioned before if you live upstairs you'll hardly ever run the heat but AC will run 24/7. When you first move in take pictures of the whole apartment and condition of the appliances. And NEVER sign anything over a 1 year lease.
Mar 27, 2015 That's a good call. My cell reception sucks in my apartment. I actually had to get an app to switch from 4G for 3G since the signal was stronger Living with good friends is also a big mistake. I lived with a real good friend from high school and because he was a lazy f--- at cleaning and being responsible I barely talk to him anymore
Mar 27, 2015 Check to see if basic cable is automatically turned on in your apartment before signing up for a TV plan. Often times cable companies leave it turned on in all units inside the apartment complex because it's easier than constantly turning it off and on. Only 'paid' for internet last year (free Google Fiber). I also don't need 1000+ channels. Make sure you take the time to write down everything that's wrong in the unit when moving in. Landlords will try to f--- you over when your lease is up. I received a $1000+ bill (on top of my entire security deposit) from a landlord in college. They tried to charge me for broken screens, scratched floors, etc.
Mar 27, 2015 Make sure there wasn't ever a young girl murdered there and left her soul in a transformation of a ghostly sprite that haunts the apartment until her murder is solved and she is released from her earthly bondage and can ascend to heaven. Also, turn the shower on and stick your hand in to check the water pressure and see how long the hot water lasts.
