Dec 1, 2017 2006 is a weird year to pick for kanye because he: 1. didn't release an album and: 2. I'd argue 2010-2013 was Kanye's reign with good fridays/MBDTF (the masterpiece), WTT (the legendary collab/victory lap), CS (the label album that, while wasn't the greatest, spawned a handful of mega hits), and finally Yeezus (the complete "f--- you" to the maximalist, mainstream formula he just crafted. Wayne's peak is also more like 2006-2009. I wouldn't say Drake ran things til 2015-2016 Honestly...yeah. He had a mean streak in the early 2000s.
Dec 1, 2017 There's so much overlap everywhere that's hard to definitively say in most places, aside from maybe Wayne's run. You could make a compelling argument for 2 Chainz 2011-2012 instead of Kanye. But we also have to define what we mean by 'running' rap. Is it that they're the best rapper alive? The most influential? The most sought after? The most popular? Appeared on the most songs? All of the above?
Dec 1, 2017 I just saw the follow up tweet @Bourbon Ben posted, cuz yeah I was unsure what she meant exactly by 'running' rap. I still think after 50 Cent she's off. Something like: 2006: Jeezy 2007-2009: Lil Wayne 2010-2011: Kanye 2012: 2 Chainz 2013: Kendrick 2014: Unsure 2015-2016: Drake 2017: Migos?
Dec 1, 2017 Of course he was if you can't admit this you are straight delusional. and he ran 2002 with TES + Lose Yourself. Nelly never had a bigger hit than Lose Yourself not a higher selling album than TES, dunno how he ran 2002 lol.
Dec 1, 2017 yea I was genuinely curious about that too like i feel like he was bigger later, but obviously don't remember cuz my a--- was barely in kindergarten at the time. you put it nicely tho, so thank you. i took it as popularity i guess. i definitely agree with besides wayne tho. he was definitely running s---, no matter how you look at it, back when i was in middle school. for a number of years too. s----s wild to think about
Dec 1, 2017 see my response to big cuntry, but it was a legitimate question lol. i thought it was later like 02-03, cuz that's some of my earliest memories of listening to rap and eminem was obviously huge then.
Dec 1, 2017 02-03 is tough man.. even when discussing hottest. Nelly had something like 3 Number 1 Hits in that time frame and one top 5 hit, he was everywhere, Nellyville did insane numbers ~700k first week, stayed in the top of 3 of the charts for 2 months. Great staying power. Vs Eminem had 1 Number 1 Hit (Lose Yourself which was number 1 for almost 4 months from 11/09/02 through 1/25/03) and 2 top 5 hits, The Eminem Show sold like 1.3million second week, Then we had the 8 Mile Movie too which was big + 8 Mile Soundtrack which sold ~700k first week (A little less than Nellyville) he also signed 50 Cent who put out GRODT in 2003. He too was everywhere. Shame Nelly doesn't get much love now days, almost feels like people forget how big he was, possibly due to TES/8 Mile being so big. @Big Cuntry @SliK Does this sound roughly right?
