Dec 9, 2015 They're not subject to the same regulations/overhead as taxi drivers, and in a lot of cities, they're operating illegally. Beyond that, the lack of overhead is allowing them to charge substantially less than taxis, which has lead to unfair competition.
Dec 9, 2015 Because uber is taking taxi business All it takes to become an uber driver is watching a 13 minute YouTube video and clicking accept, you can have a criminal record and even multiple DUIs there's literally no background checks. In most cities it's actually difficult to become a taxi driver because they put an artificial scarcity on the taxi licenses. Taxi drivers barely scrape by, and uber drivers are lowering the profits even more by taking all the business and of often times ending up with less than minimum wages because of ubers profit cut, whichethey're allowed to do since technically they're not a taxi business and are instead an app to connect drivers and customers. Uber is basically destroying an entire industry and everyone's livelihood who's involved
Dec 9, 2015 The competition is fair. Taxi drivers are the woat and way overpriced. They've just been running an over priced monopoly and finally have some competition. In NYC if you want to go from Manhattan to another borough depending on the time or day they'll pull up and say no and bounce. Uber is awesome. I use it all the time now. I used to go to a local bar at my old spot and pay $25-$30 to go 5 miles home if I was drunk. With uber I was paying under $10 and that was including the tip Where do you guys see there's no background check. Or is that in Canada? Here they do a 6 or 7 year driving and criminal background check
Dec 9, 2015 I'm not sure about background checks. I'm gonna try to drive for Uber tho, I was gonna make a thread on here asking about it. If I get jumped in a video I'll shout you guys out
Dec 9, 2015 It's awesome for customers but it's putting thousands out of business and those who drive for uber are the people who couldn't get any other job because there are no documented cases of uber drivers making even minimum wage Not to mention the inherent danger in letting random unlicensed jackasses drive you around, and with the growing popularity of uber the demands just going to increase, sucking in even more unskilled drivers to create an even more hazardous element for customers. s-----y taxis are a necessary evil
Dec 9, 2015 A lot of people say that taxi drivers just need to switch to uber then, but they have so much invested as far as licenses and plates go (which can cost upwards of 200k in some cities, more in cities like Toronto), that switching isn't an option. Regulation needs to be put on Uber, or it needs to be reduced on taxis. Uber is the better service, no doubt, but they're not operating on an even playing field.
Dec 9, 2015 As much as I love the free market, don't taxi drivers need licensing to do their job, or am I wrong? If I'm not wrong, Uber is unfair, don't you think?
Dec 9, 2015 I heard a taxi plate is close to $1,000,000 in NYC. Uber drivers just need a $5,000 car. That's the issue.
Dec 9, 2015 All the drivers I've talked to say they do it part time and the thing they like about it is they can work whenever they want. So if you don't want to deal with drunk f---s you just drive when it's day time or refuse areas with bars. How do you mean unlicensed? They have their drivers license. Being a taxi driver isn't a luxury job, most of the drivers are dirt poor and immigrants. I rather trust a dude who does it part time for extra cash and didn't pass some s-----y test that a 5th grader can that makes him certified. Will people lose their jobs? Yes. Will DUI's go down from people choosing to take a cheap ride home? Yes Will I have to sit in a taxi with some smelly guy on his cellphone who has an attitude problem anymore? No, because I rate the driver with Uber and if their rating drops below I believe 3.5 or 4 stars they are no longer eligible to drive This is the greedy taxi industries problem, not the uber drivers. Unfortunately taxi drivers will take a hit but you shouldn't halt progress because some people will be left back
Dec 9, 2015 Yup, I've been told it's $250,000 in my city (Edmonton, Canada) so $1,000,000 seems like a bargain in NYC. It's f----- man, they either need to fix the issue of overpriced taxi plates, or subject Uber drivers to them too. Issue is, that'll k--- Uber. On top of that there's also insurance and stuff.
Dec 9, 2015 Yeah, nothing say progress like ripping off a bunch of poor cab drivers who went the legal way instead of Uber.
Dec 9, 2015 Not really. To be a cab driver, you're supposed to have a license. It's a weird loophole.
Dec 9, 2015 very true.Ubers are prohibited from my town because they take away from taxi drivers like there is a law saying they cant do it
Dec 9, 2015 Im with Worm on this one.. same reason why Spotify is superior and has almost replaced the record stores because the Music industry was unwilling to adapt to the times.
Dec 9, 2015 Uber drivers have drivers licenses Taxi industry makes more money by bleeding the drivers to pay for their medallions. Shouldn't need it in the first place. If your friend picks you up to go out in his car is it illegal??
