Apr 11, 2020 Ice Cube is easily a top 10 rapper OAT, he has a few of the best rap albums ever (The Predator, Amerikkka's most, Death Certificate) and then some really solid ones as well. He was instrumental in ushering in modern writing styles in rap during the late 80s early 90s. He's the chief architect behind one of the most legendary groups of all time. He made a top ten rap song OAT. So why isn't he respected? Is it because of the views he sold out with his acting choices? Is he just too old now? Am I overselling him?
Apr 11, 2020 It's because he a sell out. Said f--- the police then played one. Dude is a snitch and only has one good song.
Apr 11, 2020 Hits only he has probably ten great songs, then album cuts he has a ton of deep songs. No Vaseline is one of the best diss tracks ever. So what if he got his bag, dude's still a legend.
Apr 11, 2020 Inreresting question - believe it or not Ice Cube was the first rapper I got into - I bought Death Certificate even before Eminem Show. Boyz N the Hood was my favorite movie in high school. I think his run as #1 rapper is without question, as u said, especially like 88-93. Obvious HOF contender. After that the genre moved on, and his persona shifted easily into movies. Actually I wrote this a few years back on this exact topic: https://theweek.com/articles/616026/how-ice-cube-quietly-evolved-into-hollywood-powerhouse He's pretty savvy - throwback style movie star. And once he became hollywood idk that it was he 'sold out' just that he aged out of the kind of music that made him so memorable and dynamic. That said i recently listened to some of his new stuff and didnt think it was ~bad. his skills maybe have waned...... both bc he was so political and so captured the zeitgeist around rodney king, now hes got other priorities and interests.
Apr 11, 2020 i should send you my playlist. nothing is more important to a wedding then a crisp soundtrack. no Shout, no YMCA tbh. I had two Good Friday tracks on it.
Apr 11, 2020 Ice Cube is in my top 10 and Death Certificate is a top 3 rap album oat but he’s def tarnished his legacy with his last few s-----y albums
Apr 11, 2020 I convinced my fiance to let me play runaway while the wedding party walks down the aisle
Apr 11, 2020 so lets say he pulled a snoop and made a comeback (quality wise) does that increase his standing?
Apr 11, 2020 well done. All of the Lights with string quartet for me. theyre based in boston hire them
Apr 11, 2020 Probably, yeah. I don’t think his last few projects are completely irredeemable, nor do I think anyone would argue that he had an Eminem level fall-off. A lot of people wrote Jay-Z off as washed after BP3 and MCHG, but that mostly disappeared after 4:44
Apr 11, 2020 I seem to be the one Jay-Z stan who enjoys MCHG. but yeah I'd love to see ice cube make a comeback
Apr 11, 2020 only like $200-300 tbh. do it srsly. yeah the jayz comparison is kinda apt. both them have grown out of it and moved on. ice t too. their style doesnt rly work nowadays and their personas work better in movies. not cringe but kinda boring old hat rap. i did like when ice cube flirted w hard rock. was kinda cool. i am surprised he doesnt do more collabs -- must not be into it besides his own solo stuff you silly. @icecube is great poster tho
Apr 11, 2020 ice cube's last good song was Go to Church...which says a lot about his late-career output Straight Outta Compton/Amerikkka's Most Wanted/k--- At Will/Death Certificate is one of the most incredible runs in rap history though
Apr 11, 2020 i get what you mean, though i dont personally rly like that song. i feel like theres been others that are equally if not more solid recently.. edit: re: collabs, Don't Trip is great. wrote about that and Issues here https://www.vice.com/en_us/article/65zqvq/a-brief-history-of-nwa-collaborations-post-nwa
